Seizing the day
IN the art of the tea ceremony, there is a saying, “One time, one chance” (一期一会), which means: Life presents us with just one chance to be happy and so we should take it, cherish it and live to the fullest.
We senior high school students are now facing a greater challenge than at any other moment in our early lives. I’m talking about the college entrance examination. No matter how hard we work we can still fall victim (受害者) to despair (绝望). Everything seems to be a matter of the “survival of the fittest”.
But as we Chinese say, a good honing gives a sharp edge to the blade, and the bitter cold adds fragrance to plum blossoms (宝剑锋从磨砺出,梅花香自苦寒来). If we look back over our young lives we will see that we have laughed as much as cried, have made achievements as well as suffered disappointments.
Counting down the days to the exam I am taking a different approach: No more of that dreary (沉闷的) routine (日常事务) for me. But I am not quitting. Instead, I plan to be a more active fighter in the upcoming battle. I have given up complaining about the severity (繁重) of our workload and instead am concentrating on enjoying this moment before althood to the full.
Sometimes one lives wholly in preparation for one moment. That moment will be the day June 7, 2010. I believe that at that time all our dreams will be realized.
Are you feeling a little nervous? Do you fear to dream? Do you fear to take a risk? But remember, the biggest risk is not to dream, but not to dream at all.
Online friendship
FOR 16-year-old Chen Haoxiang of Shanghai, social networking on the Internet is a lifeline. Each weekend he checks his QQ messages, updates his profiles (个人介绍) and keeps in touch with his 162 online friends.
“We share our feelings, discuss computer games, talk about new cartoons and compare QQ Spaces,” said Chen, who spends about five hours a week online. “In the process, we build friendships.”
Many other teenagers like Chen expand (扩大) their circle of friendship by digital (数字的) communication such as instant messaging (网络聊天), e-mail, social networking sites, according to a recent nationwide survey by the Shanghai Ecation and Research Institution.
The survey suggests that online social networking enables young people to have more and closer friendships and that friends influence each other. Although parents and teachers worry about the safety of the Internet and social networking tools, many teenagers believe that they are able to filter (过滤) bad channels of information.
“I only choose those my age who share my interests to be my friends. Otherwise, I delete them,” Chen said.
Half of the respondents (回答者), especially older graders, say they make friends with “honest”, “humorous” and “ecated” people. Teen females are more likely than teen males to say they value the “ecated” factor when they decide whether to add the stranger to their friend list.
Still, not all teenagers are convinced (信服的) that social networking is a good idea, despite saying they can't live without it.
Forty-nine percent of the respondents say that they talk about things online they would not want their parents to know and expect emotional support from their online friends. And 38 percent say they only seek comfort in the virtual (虚拟的) world when they have real life difficulties or are depressed (郁闷的).
When asked if they have ever wanted to meet any of their online friends in person, only 4 percent say “yes”.
“It's risky to meet online friends. Stories of Internet violence (暴力) are common,” said 17-year-old Meng Yuan of Cheng, nicknamed “Butterfly on a flower” at QQ.
I just keep going
PERHAPS you know the experience – you long for something, but can't seem to achieve it. Not just that, but your goal seems to move further and further away, like a bus you've failed to catch. You quit – and it's not an unnatural thing to do.
Yet life has taught me to have a different attitude, and I want to share it with you.
When I was in Junior 2, my dream was to achieve a good ranking in my grade. Many times I imagined running home, my report card in my hand, eager to tell my mom the good news. I would close my eyes and imagine her contented smile as she saw how well I had done.
It was a way for a 14-year-old girl to gee (加油) herself up for the hard work she faced at school each and every day.
I studied hard the reference books I myself had bought and tifully reviewed my lessons. When the time came for the exam, I was confident. However, when I got the result it wasn't what I'd expected. It was as if fate (命运) had played a trick on me.
That afternoon, I dragged myself home. Tears filled my eyes and the world began to seem unreal. The laughter of students as they passed me sounded disgusting to my ears. I was so frustrated.
I got home and in a low voice told Mom my scores. To my surprise, she was calm. There wasn't a hint (暗示) of anger or disappointment on her face.
“Don't worry about it,” she said. “You tried your best, didn't you?”
Her words comforted me. Not only did she not criticize me, she let me understand that no girl as ambitious as I, who worked so hard for her dream, would be hurt for having suffered a setback (挫折).
Like everyone, I still have problems from time to time, but I am more mature now and don't simply give up when I come to an obstacle (阻碍). Deep within me there is a spirit of determination that pushes me on – my desire to be the best.
