安妮九个月大之前在加拿大无意间输入的英语语音信号，没想到成了她后来英语辨音能力的基础。英语启蒙早晚的关键不在于学习多少单词和句子，而在于听力辨音能力的培养。从出生开始，越早输入英语语音信号，孩子的听力辨音能力、听觉记忆能力就越强。

自从九个月大时回国，女儿安妮重返温哥华时已经快四岁了。之前在国内进行的英语启蒙，主要是听光盘。在众多的光盘中，安妮最爱的一个是清华幼儿英语的《语感启蒙》(2004版)；还有一个就是《洪恩巴迪英文童谣》，是由美国少儿合唱团的小演员领唱的。这两套光盘，女儿断断续续地听了差不多两年，尤其喜欢前面的一套。

到温哥华之后，我们只倒了几天时差就去幼儿园了。第一天我在那里陪园。中午准备吃饭时，全体小朋友唱歌，女儿一听就乐了，《语感启蒙》里面有，她也会唱！于是，第一天的融入就因为这几首儿歌而变得特别简单。

很快，安妮在幼儿园已经能够听懂老师的几乎所有指令，和国外的孩子也能够玩在一起并且成了好朋友，但是回家讲话几乎还是不说英语。直到五个月以后，情况才开始慢慢有所改变。老师的评价是安妮的语言进步很大。对于这个评价，当时我也没太在意。那个时候就是觉得，反正大家都说，孩子到了国外，英语自然就会好的，也不用费心。

当时，幼儿园里也有一些从中国来的孩子。大家交流的时候，我发现了一个很有趣的现象：有些孩子在国内学过一些英语，比如上过英语课，会一些单词和句型。但是，到了加拿大以后，他们在语言方面并没有显示出什么优势，甚至在和国外孩子交流方面还要晚些。

还有一些孩子需要的时间明显更长。有些孩子已经在幼儿园呆了快一年的时间，说的并不多，还有的孩子说的明显有错误。这一点后来在小宝幼儿园也得到了证实。比如小宝幼儿园的一个男孩儿，在幼儿园快一年了，但是很少能完整复述老师的话，有些时候他会拿老师的话来问妈妈，但是妈妈明显感觉到这些话复述得不正确。

同样的语言环境，为什么孩子会有这样的差异？ 以前我觉得导致这种差异的原因是孩子的个人领悟能力和兴趣因素。但是后来，我看到了一篇文章，说英国一位学者发现，如果孩子在九个月以内能够接触到两种以上的语言信号，那么这些语言信号会让他形成记忆，这对于以后学外语会有所帮助。

还有一项研究称，日本人有两个英文字母的音发不出来，但是对比研究儿童，十个月以内的儿童就不存在这个问题。所以说，辨音能力随着年龄的增长会退化。后来我还看到资料说，儿童期学第二语言，大脑会有分区地去存储这些语言信号，但是随着年龄的增长，这种能力也一样会退化。一般认为十二岁是个界限。年龄越大，语言的学习对于母语的依赖越强，最后，只能按照外语的方式来学习。

对于各种研究资料我一贯并不是特别重视，也不会见到什么研究成果都拿来给孩子用。但是看到上面的几则报道，回想安妮的成长过程，我觉得很多疑问被解开了。比如安妮两岁在国内的时候，当时我对英语谈不上重视，所以买的光盘里面中英文都有。而在这些光盘中，安妮恰恰是自己选择了外教领唱的英文光盘，那些中文儿歌以及中国孩子唱的英文儿歌几乎都被搁置一旁。

因为安妮特别喜欢《语感启蒙》这套光盘，所以我把它推荐给了好几个朋友。但是朋友的孩子反应不一。有的是刚放一点就不要了，说要看中文动画片。我曾经对此非常不解。安妮爸爸当时就说，也许安妮今天对英语的感觉和九个月之前在加拿大时耳朵里被灌进了大量的 Talk Show(脱口秀)电视节目有很大关系。当时我不大相信，但是后来当我看到国外的研究成果之后，觉得也许真的是有某种关联在里面。

再看小宝的情形，和安妮也差不多。一岁半以前，小宝和我一起经常中加两边跑。和很多在国外的中国家庭一样，我们的家庭语言也不用英语。上Daycare(幼儿园)之前，小宝的英语没有输出。但是他在听的方面比安妮当时的素材要丰富得多。而且和安妮一起玩的时候，安妮有时候用英语讲话，他也都能明白，偶尔也跟着学上几个词。之前，小宝参加了几个月的亲子班。这个班每天有个 Circle Time(老师领着孩子们围坐在一起唱儿歌、读书、做游戏的时间)，也就是半个多小时的时间，小宝听了不少，但是也同样是没有输出。

等到小宝上幼儿园后，两个多月就开始输出——这一点，明显比安妮的输出要早很多。他输出的语言，一听都是老师对他或者对别的孩子说的话。而只要是他能复述出来的就会非常清楚，几乎没有什么错误。比如他咳嗽，老师说：Cover your mouth. 回家以后，每当他咳嗽的时候就会捂上嘴同时把这句话也说出来。

同样是不能说的孩子，为什么有的孩子到了英语环境之后能很快地开始说，有的就要晚些甚至复述出来的还有错误？或者说，同样是上英语班、找外教，为什么有的孩子很快能和外教交流，可是有的孩子花了几倍的时间还是达不到这个程度？

我感觉，最主要的问题还是听的能力，听力辨音的能力是关键。辨音能力强的孩子，能很快把别人的话进行拆分，这个时候他们听到的不是一个个抽象的单词，而是一个个有意义的片段，然后对应上具体的情境，就可以明白是什么意思，并且马上可以输出。

这一点，在成人身上也有体现。同样是在国外生活，有的人英语提高得很快，但是有的多少年了仍然无法交流。有人说，成年人在国外学英语有一个规律，那就是基础好的提高快，基础差的，听到语音信号也等于无效输入，最后知道的还是原来自己会的，新的东西因为听不懂，所以最后对自己依然没有用。在这一点上，十二岁以上的孩子，尤其是高中阶段出国的孩子，表现和成人基本一致。这也就可以解释为什么在国内英语基础不好的孩子，在国外的英语环境中，上了好几年语言学校英语还不能过关，甚至无法达到申请大学的标准。

在国外的这几年，我曾经注意观察过十二岁以后出国的孩子。我发现，同样的环境，有些在国内有过很多年英语培训经历的孩子，能输出的时间也明显要晚。而且在输出的时候，这些孩子所讲的英文和安妮这样的小孩子有明显的区别。具体地说，安妮这种年龄的孩子的输出，是在听明白别人所说内容之后的复述，是在听的基础上形成自己的语言，是一个自然的英文思维的过程。而年龄大的孩子，更多的是在搜寻过去学过的句型，思维和母语交叉，翻译的痕迹非常明显。所以经常会出现老外讲的英语他听不懂，他讲的英语老外也听不懂的情况。
