但英语口语交际并不是一个简单的过程，它需要交际者本身具有多方面的能力和知识水平及其它内在因素，这里笔者想就发挥英语交际功能应当注意的几个问题，谈谈自己的看法。
一、语音、语调、语法及词汇
很难设想一个不懂语音、语法、语调的人会是一个很好的交际家。提高交际能力，首先是发音准确，吐字清晰，避免含糊不清，模棱两可的现象。
语调问题也是一个很重要的问题，人们在说话时，不同的语调可表达不同的含义和感情色彩，
使用什么样的语气，直接关系着交际一方所表达的思想感情，对口语交际显得非常重要，因而，语气要恰当，若引起信息接收者(交际对方)的反感则对交际不利，而且在什么样的场合使用怎样的语气也关系着交际的成败。
再谈语法。语法说到底还属于理论范畴，它来源于语言实践，应用于指导语言实践，语法为学习语言而服务，而不应主宰语言学习，不能膜拜语法。但是，为了把思想感情更准确更清晰地表达出来，在英语口语交际过程中我们应该学习和掌握必要的语法(特别是英语交际语法。)
二、场合
什么场合用什么语体? 这决定于种种因素：说话人的身份高低，性别异同。他们之间的交情深浅、谈话的内容、各人的态度、情绪等等。总之，社会关系至关重要，所谓语言用得得体与否，不仅指语音、词汇、语法包括语言本身是否无误，而且指是否适应它的社会环境。
正式的语言是在某些严肃的场合当众使用的语言，例如在正式公开的演说中; 较随便的语言主要是在和私人谈话，私人信件中等场合所使用的语言; 和一个不太熟悉的人讲话或和长者，上级讲话时，避免使用较随便的，甚至是不礼貌的口语，应使用较为客气的语体。
三、语言的经济原则
语言是交际的工具，交际时至少要说一句话，这样才能把一个比较完整的意思表达出来，所以句子是语言中最大的语法单位，又是交际的基本单位，最短的句子可以只有一个词，如：“Who?”“Me”.在日常的语言交际中，语言使用往往遵循经济原则：“如果一个词足够的话，决不用第二个。”信息传递不仅要求准确，而且要求在最大程度上既快速，又节省，简约的语言表达可满足这种要求。这种缩略现象出现在交际过程中，能够满足一定的交际目的。
四、文化背景
语言是文化的重要载体，也是文化的一种表现形式，然而任何一个国家的语言都有它的地域性，民族性乃至生活习惯和文化背景，它们之间的差异影响着人们的思维，意识，概念和行为方式。反过来语言表达的异同又是各自文化的体现，但是不同语言模式和行为模式往往又不为跨文化民族所熟悉。在沟通行为和赋予意义方面存在着一定的差异，在交际中产生误会、笑话甚至不愉快，以至交际的失败
五、克服心理障碍
有些学生甚至有些老师都有这方面的心理障碍：怕说不好而不敢说，越不敢说，就越说不好，应该摒弃这种心理障碍，大胆地去尝试，起初可能会出现交际失败如引起笑话，误解，甚至伤害，不愉快，但是实践多了，也就自然了，那么怎样才能克服这种心理障碍呢?下面这两种方法，不妨一试。
