It’s noticable that western holidays are becoming increasingly popular day by day, while chinese traditional festivals are being somewhat neglected. Not long before about 10 doctors in beijing university and qinghua unversity announced that we should reject the invasion of western holidays ,because they regard western holidays as an challenge against our traditional festivals and culture.
Frankly speaking, i don't quite agree with them.Indeed, we should never neglect or even discard our traditonal festivals as china boasts a brilliant history and splendid traditions. (examples).But why can't we absorb the meaningful western holidays and culture.
There are obvious reasons why some western holidays are so popular in china. On the one hand, some of the western holidays which we chinese don't have are reasonable and meaningful, such as father's day and april fool's day etc. On the other hand,the prevalence of globalization enables western culture to prevail in china. Overwhelmed by such a trend,chinese unconsiciously get involved in western holidays and culture.
With the further development of the whole world, the cultural communication between different countries and nations becomes faster and more and more important. We are indeed from different nations, but we are the citizens of the same world, so the outstanding culture of different nations is the commom wealth of everyone on the earth.The only way for us to protect our traditional culture is to reject the foreign culture? The answer is definitely no. What we ought to do is to spare no effort to ecate chinese to get to know and treasure our splendid traditions instead of rejecting foreign culture. Only by ecating can we set our confidence and belief towards our culture. Only by ecating can we play a really important role in the world.

My Definition of Success

专家点评:演讲开头用了一个寓言故事，十分生动，最后点出对成功的看法，达到了点题的效果。 “Once upon a time， there was a king who had a daughter as beautiful as a blooming rose. To all the suitors who came to the king's palace to ask for the hand of the princess, the old king assigned three tasks to be accomplished, each next to impossible. One day, into the king's palace came a handsome young prince..." Well, you know the rest. The three tasks may be different in different versions, but the main plot is always the same, with the prince claiming the princess's hand triumphantly.
And the ending is always the same, finishing with the line "And they live happily every after."Why aren't we tired of something so fanciful, so unrealistic, and, I would say, so unimaginative? How can a story like that enre generations of repetition`? Because, I think, it is a typical success story. It is highly philosophical and symbolic. By implication, we see a 4-step definition of success: 1 ) a goal to be set. as represented by the beautiful princess; 2 ) challenges to be met, as represented by the three tasks; 3 ) the process of surmounting difficulties, as represented by the ordeals the youth goes through; and 4 ) the reward of success, as represented by the happy marriage.The story not only caters to everyone's inward yearning for success, but also emphasizes the inseparability of the process and the result. The reward of success will be much amplified if the path leading towards it is treacherous, and vice versa. If a person inherits his father's millions and leads an easy life, he is not a successful person even in material terms, because there are no difficulties involved in his achieving affluence. The term "success", to be sure. will not sit still for easy definition. But as I understand it, the true meaning of success entails a combination of both the process and the satisfactory result of an endeavor. To clarify my view, let me give another analogy.If we changed the rules of football, GREatly enlarged the goal and sent away David Seaman or any other goal keeper, so that another David, namely David Beckham, could score easily, then scoring would not give him the thrill of accomplishment and the joy that it brings. If we further changed the rules by not allowing Arsenal's defenders to defend, so that Beckham needed only to lift a finger, actually a toe, to score, then there would be no game at all, because the meaning of winning would have disappeared. In accepting the challenge, in surmounting the difficulties and in enring the hardship, success acquires its value. The sense of attainment varies in proportion to the degree of difficulties on overcomes.The concept of success is not constant but relative because the nature of difficulty is also relative. Something you do effortlessly might pose a GREat difficulty for a handicapped person. In acquiring the ability to do the same as you can, he or she achieve success. That's why we greatly admire Stephen Hawking, because, though confined to a wheel chair, he has contributed greatly to the field of science.I myself, a rather shy person by nature who easily suffer from stage fright, had to pluck up GREat courage to take part in a speech contest like this. I could have stayed away and had an easy time of it by not entering the university level contest.But I chose to accept the challenge and to face the difficulties. Now here I am. If I come out first, it will be a great success for me. If I come out last-I hope this will not be the case-but if I come out last, I will not call my attempt a failure, but will also celebrate it as a true success, because part of my goal is my own character training-to do more assertive, to be brave in face of difficulties. For me, it is a meaningful step forward, small as it is, in the long journey toward the final success in my life, because I have truly gained by participating.Let us return to our handsome young prince and the 4-step definition of success. You my have noticed that the usual worldly criteria of wealth, position and fame were not mentioned as part of the story, but rather, it emphasized the process of overcoming difficulties. Kobe Bryant is my favorite role model. There is no denying the fact that he is not the person recognized as a perfect role model by the traditional people. As their standard, the role model should be perfect not only at court but also in the life. Kobe Bryant, an ambivalent combination, is said to be arrogant, selfish and a bad player, but no one can deny that he works with tenacity, braveness and endeavor.
Kobe Bryant trains 6 hours and shoots the basket 1000 times every day. He never stopped, which no one can reach, so he is called the most diligent player in NBA. There are full of sad on the Kobe’s basketball way. Such as accusation, pressure of perfectionism, environment influence, inexhaustible sweat and the silent tear. It was the obstinacy all the way that made Kobe to be an admiring example by all people.

As a matter of fact,I had been in the habbit of getting up early with the record on so as to listen to my English.but it was not permitted in the dorm just because English was not scene and the time of their getting up was too late.Yeah!I didn’t want to be the public enermy.Finally,I had no choice but to accept the fact .Afterwards,little by little , I became overtaxed and eventually fell victim to the Yu Men”sydrome—“Yu Men” being stressful misery. literally,I was overwrought from the pressure of work and life at college.I wanted experience and own almost everything.Emotionally,I was just like a insatiable kid whose hand had got stuck in the candy jam with too many sweets.This is me in my first semester.
Luckily,I didn’t suffer for too long from the “get everything” fantasy,Now I have found what I want in reality.I am learning which choices to make.Joining this oral English competition , for instance ,have been one.So today I stand here……Thank you.

But will we be able to face the challenge and support ourselves against all odds? Will we be able to better the lives of others? Will we be able to accept the responsibility of building the future of our country?
The cynics say the college students are the pampered lost generation, which would cringe at the slightest discomfort. But the cynics are wrong. The college students I see are eagerly learning about how to live independently. We help each other clean the dormitory, go shopping and bargain together, and take part time jobs to supplement our pocket money.
The cynics say we care for nothing other than grades; and we neglect the need for character cultivation. But again, the cynics are wrong. We care deeply for each other, we cherish freedom, we treasure justice, and we seek truth. Last week, thousands of my fellow students had their blood type tested in order to make a contribution for the children who suffer from blood cancer.
As college students, we are adolescents at the critical turning point in our lives. We all face a fundamental choice: cynicism or faith, each will profoundly impact our future, or even the future of our country. I believe in all my fellow classmates. Though we are still inexperienced and even a little bit childish. I believe that we have the courage and faith to meet any challenge and take on our responsibilities. We are preparing to assume new responsibilities and tasks, and to use the ecation we have received to make our world a better place. I believe in our future.

This is a glass of water, tasteless, right? However if you add sugar, it will taste sweet, but if you add vinegar, it will become bitter. The same is true with our life____ the flavor is created by our choices.
If kindness is added to a strange you will have a friend; but if hostility is added, you will have an enemy. If love is added to a pile of red bricks you will have a home, but if hatred is add to those bricks , you will have an concentration camp.
So my dear friends, never complain that life is boring and the world is disappointing. If don’t like the taste of your life, change the ingredients.
Three year ago, I weighed more than 100 hundred kilograms which caused significant embarrassment and frustration in my life. Like always failing my P.E examinations, like always being laughed at by girls, like being terrified to speak in public. It was my grandmother’s encouragement that revived from my passive attitude to become confident in myself. She said “ My dear, if you can’t change you figure, why not treat it as your own style. So I began to cautiously employ the new way of thinking. By choosing to change my outlook on life, I developed the confidence to make a difference and finally I found a totally new world.
So my dear friend, if faith, hope, love, enrance are added to your life, you will find the confidence to conquer your limitation and embrace new challenges. And hopefully with my speech included, you will have a fantastic speech contest.

这是一杯白开水，平淡无味，对吧？可是加上点糖呢，他尝起来会有甜味；如果加的是苏打水，味道就会变苦。人生同样如此——个中滋味在于我们的选择。

三年前，我重达100多公斤，这给我带来了很多尴尬和挫折：体育课老是不及格，总被女孩们嘲笑，更不敢当众发表意见。幸而由于祖母的鼓励，我不在消极人生，而是充满自信。她曾经说过：“孩子，如果体形无法改变，为什么不把它看做自己独特的风格呢？” 我开始这样来审视人生，通过改变生活的视角，我信心大增地去改变我的人生，很快就发现一个崭新的世界。

The East and the West, Let’s enjoy the combination of the two cultures?
Kipling said:“East is east, and west is west, and never the twain shall meet!” But now, a century later, they have met.
They have met in business. They have met in ecation. They have met in the arts. Some people will argue that these meetings will leave us with a choice between east and west, but I believe that the best future lies in the creative combination of both worlds. We can make western ideas, customs and technology our own, and adapt them to our own use. We can enjoy the best of both worlds, because our tradition is, above all, one of selecting the best and making it our own.
I love Beijing and Hennan opera because it always reminds me of who I am. But I am also a fan of pop music, especially English songs. So I have combined eastern melody with western language. It is called western henna opera.
When two cultures meet, there may be things in one culture, which do not fit into the tradition of the other. When this happens, we need to learn to understand and respect the customs of another culture. Then there are certain things some people may not like. To this, I will say, if you do not like it, please try to tolerate it. To learn to tolerate what you personally don’t like is a great virtue at a time when different cultures mix and merge. Before us, there are two rivers, eastern and western cultures. At present, they may run in different courses. But eventually, they will converge into the vast sea of human culture.
Right now, I can see peoples of eastern and western cultures, standing side by side, singing the Olympic theme song: we are hand in hand, heart to heart, together we will shape a beautiful tomorrow! Thank you!

在我们面前有两条河流，东方文化和西方文化。现在，它们也许正朝着不同的方向流去。但是最终它们将汇合到人类文化的海洋里。

Farewell, Indifference
Who was the most well-known figure in China last month? It’s Ma JiaJue—the college student who murdered 4 of his roommates. Many people attributed his crime to his poverty and deficient ecation. In my opinion, his crime also has much to do with his classmates’ indifference.
Indifference is a terrible disease in today’s colleges and the whole society. It’s not rare that two students who have studied together for 4 years have never spoken to each other. It’s not rare that a student who has been absent from class for several days is not noticed at all. It’s also not rare that a student who has severe psychological problems is not cared about at all.
Some people may say ‘What the students with psychological problems like Ma JiaJue need is not care but psychotherapy.” However, when people are ill, what they need most is not only medical treatment, but also care from people around them. Every smile and every caring word will bring sunshine to their life.
I once heard one of my roommates who was an introverted girl sobbing at mid-night. Being afraid of disturbing her, I sent a text message to comfort her. The next day, she told me that she was crying for not being invited to one of her friend’s birthday party. She thought she was neglected by others. But my message was really comforting which told her someone still cared about her.
What can we do to prevent the tragedy of Ma JiaJue from happening again? Some people may say ‘Let’s open more psychological courses in schools.’ and other people may say ‘Let’s donate more money for the poor students.’ But I’ll say “My fellow student, let’s give more love and care to our roommates, our classmates and every person around us!”
走出冷漠
谁是中国上个月最有名的人物? 这当然要数马加爵了——这个杀害了四名同学的大学生。很多人将他的犯罪归结于他的贫穷和不全面的教育。但我觉得他的犯罪还跟他周围同学的冷漠有很大关系。
冷漠是流行于当今校园及整个社会中的一种可怕的疾病。有的同学在一起学习了4年却从未说过话，有的同学几天没去上课却无人知晓，还有的同学有了严重的心理问题却得不到关心。
有人说：像马加爵那样有心理问题的人需要的不是关心而是心理治疗。但在一个人生病的时候，除了医生的治疗，他需要的还有周围人的关心。一个微笑，一声问候都能为他们的生活带来阳光。
有一天半夜，我碰巧听见寝室里一个平时很内向的女孩在轻声抽泣。为了不惊动她，我给她发了一条短信来安慰她。第二天，他告诉我那晚她哭了是因为她的一位好朋友开生日聚会没有请她参加，她觉得自己被大家所忽视了。但我对短信却给了她很大安慰，让她觉得还是有人惦记着她的。
如何才能阻止马加爵的悲剧重演呢？有人呼吁应该在学校开设更多的心理辅导课程，有人建议应该给贫困学生更多的捐助，而我要说的是：同学们，让我们把更多的关爱带给我们的舍友，同学和身边的每一个人！

we don't have to have a strong physical body in order to be a hero, what we need is mental strength and courage. the stereotypical hero image portraits a man or woman with brute physical strength, however this image is not what all heroes look like. a hero is someone who sticks to his/her beliefs and sacrifices himself/herself in some aspects in order to help others or the society. according to the text, a hero saves others or the society, even the civilization sometimes. a hero also teaches other people meaningful things through his/her actions. we don't need to do anything heroic to be a hero, all we need to do is help others in any way we can and do some positive things to the society.
definitions of hero: 1. a man of distinguished courage or ability, admired for his brave deeds and noble qualities.
2. a person who, in the opinion of others, has heroic qualities or has performed a heroic act and is regarded as a model or ideal
in order to help others around the neighborhood, we can help them carry heavy things to their houses(apartments), help their kids study when they need help with school stuff, and just look out for each other in general.
when someone is having trouble with his/her studies, we can offer help, but we cannot encourage them to cheat(therefore, i do not advise you 2 use my words or 2 plagarize, u should alter them a little).
as for keeping the environment in good shape, we should pick up after ourselves, and just pick up trash that we see around in general. also, we should drive cars less (if that applies to you).
in order to contribute to the society, we need to try our best and put our efforts into things, we can't be lazy and think that other people will do things for us and that there are other people to contribute to the society. the society depends on every single one of us, if i don't do anything, you don't do anything, she doesn't do anything, he doesn't do anything, then who will do anything?

However ,some believe that it is a terrible invention,because their kids are clinging to the net games and even crime as a result of the bad effect. What is more,some girls are cheated by people through Internet.

So we have to face the internet fairly. Every thing has two sides,we should learn to use it correctly.
