当别人在你旁边罗嗦个没完，你烦透了，说“you are so boring “.(你真烦！)。“shut up !”(闭嘴！)自然没错，可人家受得了吗？不如来一句“oh, come on.give me a break !” (帮帮忙，让我歇歇吧！)这多地道、多幽默。
要想说人“气色好”。“you look fine!”当然不错，可如果你说“you’re in the pink !”就妙得多了，实际上，在英语口语中，表示颜色的词用起来非常形象生动。
“他精力充沛”美国人说：“he is bouncy.”而不说“he is energetic ”,牢记一些日常对话中的活句式是你一把必备的钥匙。

作者认为，只用一千多个单词就能搞定大部分的生活口语表达问题。注意两个关键词：大部分、生活口语。即并不是完全搞定，学术英语也不在讨论范围内。
这个观点初听可能觉得荒谬：“开玩笑，我四六级词汇背了五六千个，口语不也是磕磕绊绊的？”但继续看下去，发现倒也有些道理。因为语言的表达并不是一一对应的，可以互相替代与转换。作者声称的这一千多个单词，其实并不只有一千多个含义。
首先，对于一些单词的变化形式，如agree与agreement、develop与development，这种情况下，作者将其算作一个单词。其次，这一千多个单词实际上大部分都有多种意思和用法，比如give、take这种小词，其本身的含义再加上各种搭配用法，意思会多大几十种。所以，即使只有一千多个单词，但它们可表达出的意思就丰富多了。
书中举了如下这个例子，来论证「只用小词确实能表达丰富的含义」这一观点。
比如，“小儿子继承了她所有的财产。”这句话用英语怎么说？
常规的说法是这样的：Her youngest son inherited all her property. 但是，假如你恰好不认识inherit（继承）这个单词的话，怎么办呢？难道就干瞪眼吗？并不是的，还可以用以下四种方式来表达：希望能帮助到你，望采纳！
