在外国学英语,最有趣的大概就是可以听到很多俚语。 很多时候光听那些句子, 好像不容易马上可以会意出来他们在说什么, 听了几次后, 就慢慢可以了解这些俚语的含意了。不过, 不管什么语言, 都应该考虑到说话的对象、场合与时间, 有些俚语并不适合在正式的场合用。
俚语的主要特征:
俚语的第一个特征是幽默风趣。例如,green hand被称为"新手";Play hooky指"逃学";black sheep是"捣蛋鬼";"拍马屁"被称作Apple-polishing;"爱睡觉的人"被喻为sleepy head等等。又譬如,用Braindrain表示"人才外流";Knockout表示"杰出人或物";此类俚语既新奇又生动形象,听来趣味横生,富有幽默感,令人耳目一新,所以,立即会被许多人津津乐道和广为使用。
俚语的第二个特征是更新速度快。这是因为大多数俚语词追求新颖,所以必须不断翻新,以保持其新颖。举个例子:当你走在伦敦的大街上,如果看到No Fly Tipping的标牌时,您可千万别误以为是"别给小费"的意思,那样就要闹笑话了。它是英语中的一个俚语,意思是"不要随便扔垃圾"。Tipping在英语中是"倒垃圾"的一种古老的说法,大约在1838年开始被使用。根据牛津英语字典的解释:tipping是指"把卡车里的垃圾倒空"。后来就泛指所有的垃圾处理。在词组no fly tipping里,大家知道fly的本意和飞行有关。自从19世纪,它在俚语中就逐渐引申为"聪明"的意思,可近来它的词义又发生了转变,表示"不诚实"或"鬼鬼祟祟"。所以,fly tipping就变成了"鬼鬼祟祟地丢垃圾"了。这就是no fly tipping(不要随便扔垃圾)的来历了。

最好区分的是俗语。 俗语,也称常言,俗话,这三者应该是同义词。俗语一词,已经普遍用作语言学的术语;常言一词,带有文言的色彩;俗话一词,则有口语的气息。
【俗语】
俗语是熟语之一,指约定俗成,广泛流行,且形象精练的语句。从广义来看,俗语包括谚语、歇后语(引注语)、惯用语和口头上常用的成语,但不包括方言词、俗语词、书面语中的成语,或名著中的名言警句;从狭义来看,俗语是具有自己特点的语类之一,不同于谚语、歇后语,但一些俗语介乎几者之间。俗语来源很广,既来自人民群众的口头创作,也和诗文名句、格言警语、历史典故等有关连。
例如:
饱汉不知饿汉饥
病从口入,祸从口出
不管三七二十一
不见棺材不落泪
不怕一万,就怕万一
丑媳妇早晚也得见公婆
大树底下好乘凉
可以看出,它们的特点就是:短小、精炼、形象、广泛流行、符合事物规律。

【口语】
含义:日常口头交谈时使用的语言(区别于“书面语”)
口语灵活多变,多因场合与发言者不同而被自由使用。因为发言者与听者同在现场,有时这种发挥不但不影响听者理解,反能更生动地体现发言者心态,或使语言简洁化。
经过一段时间后口语和书面语差别就有加剧的趋向,原因是口语不断随时间与地方而变化,而书面语相对稳定。经过教育的人会从书面语学习采纳严谨的语法用于口语,而书面语经过一段时间后也需要改变以适应口语的变化,否则懂书面语的人会越来越少。语言学家从书面语文献和现代口语的差别中可以研究语言的历史发展变化。
始终有些口语表述很难应用于书面,因为它们只要在场双方理解就好,缺乏一个既定标准,甚至连对应字词都没有(仅仅有既定发音)。或者,由于口语结构相对散乱,如又缺乏语言环境,可能造成歧义与费解。因此,越正规的场合,人们越喜欢使用书面化的语言。
口语的特点:不够正式、常用语口头交谈、与“书面语”相对。

【俚语】
是极不正式的非标准词汇,通常并不限定使用地区。俚语包括新造的字词、简化的形式,或者是戏谑式地使用某些标准字词。
俚语通常来自某些群体常用的词汇:
切口,某些年龄阶层、族群、职业团体或其他群体(如大学生、爵士乐手)惯用或索性自己造出的字词;
行话,职业用语或某一行业的专门术语;
暗语,盗贼或其他罪犯传递秘密信息时所使用的切口或行话。
被大众所接受的、介于标准语及非正式语词之间的俚语,以及一些次级团体所惯用的特殊字词,经常为后者范畴内的字词发挥了一种测试平台的作用。许多俚语已被证明为有用,而被接受为标准语或非正式语,至于另外一些就标准语而言,还是太过时髦了些。
大多数亚文化群喜欢从其常接触的语言吸取词汇,赋予新义,有些则借自外语,很少自行构词的。因之俚语的形成,一如其他词汇的变形、换义,采用隐喻、明喻、民间词源、语音改变、语义扩大、缩小语义、截短法、缩略词、褒义化、贬义化、转喻、提喻、夸张、外来语及为防禁忌而使用委婉(特殊)说法等。
世界各地都存在俚语,中文里也有很多俚语。如:
哇塞、不靠谱、纯爷们儿、囧、雷等等。
英文中也如此,例如见面问好的What’s up。
于是可以看出,俚语的特点就是:极不正式、某种程度上很“前卫”、小众、难登大雅之堂。
