年，在中国的王莽时代，相传已有人用大鸟羽毛制成翅膀，浑身贴上羽毛，利用机关（即机械结构），“飞数百步”远。据说是此举是为窥视匈奴的动态，从一高塔上跃下进行了滑翔飞行。
大概也是在这个时代，意大利一名演员扇动 2 具鸟翅尝试飞行，结果失败而身亡。

年间，在中国东汉时期，著名发明家张衡造出可飞行的木鸟，这相当于原始的飞机模型。
265～316
年间，中国晋朝的葛洪发现了鸟不扇动翅膀也能滑翔的现象，首次解释了老鹰展翅高飞是借助了上升气流的托举原理。
265～420 年间，中国晋朝发明了竹蜻蜓，被世界公认为直升机的最原始形态。
549
年，风筝首次用于军事行动，当时中国南朝梁的首都金陵被困，太子肖纲与大臣羊侃利用纸风筝升空告急，将昭书放飞送出城郭，可惜被敌军射下。
559 年，相传在中国北朝时，北齐一个叫作“黄头儿”的人曾乘风筝逃命成功。
618～907
年间，中国唐朝士兵韩志和制成一木鸟，可飞“三丈高，二百步远”，其腹内设有“机关”（指驱动机械），成为古代飞行比较成功的一具航空模型。
782 年，中国唐朝临洛守将张丕被田悦围攻时，曾放出风筝升高
“百余丈”，向外界求救，终于使援军赶到。
