孩子读四年级，小学的英语相对来说是比较基础和简单的，提高英语学习能力建议从以下方面做起：
一、掌握英语的词类。
英语中的词可以根据词义、语法功能和形式特征分为十大类，即名词(noun)、代词(pronoun)、形容词(adjective)、副词(adverb)、动词(verb)、数词(numeral)、冠词(article)、介词(preposition)、连词(conjunctions)和感叹词(interjection)。其中名词，代词，形容词，副词，动词，数词，可以单独在句子中充当成分，所以又叫实词，冠词，介词，连词，叹词不能在句子中单独充当成分，所以称之为虚词。
二、掌握句子的五种基本结构。
英语句子有长在短，有简有繁，从现象看，似乎千变万化，难以捉摸，但从实质看，可以发现其内在联系，找出其共同规律。
1、英语句子的基本结构可以归纳成五种基本句型及其扩大、组合、省略或倒装。掌握这五种基本句型，是掌握各种英语句子结构的基础。
英语五种基本句型列式如下：
基本句型一： S V (主+谓)
基本句型二： S V P (主+系+表)
基本句型三： S V O (主+谓+宾)
基本句型四： S V O O (主+谓+间宾+直宾)
基本句型五： S V O C (主+谓+宾+宾补)
2、通过观察这五种句子结构，可以发现以下规律：
（1）英语中所有的句子，都必须要有主语(除了祈使句和其它特殊的可以省略主语的句式，即使这些句式，也是省略了，而不是没有);主语的位置，在谓语之前(如果在谓语后，就是倒装,这个放在以后讲);可以做主语的结构有名词，代词，数词，不定式to do，动名词doing和句子(即主句从句)。这些做主语的结构里面，如果是单个词做主语，一般放在谓语前，如果是后面的不定式，动名词和句子做主语，因为本身结构比较长，为了语言的结构的和谐，就放在了句子的末尾，而在主语部分加了it做形式主语，形成了It is adj. to do/doing/句子 的结构，这也是英语中一个非常重要的结构，各地考试题均有涉及。
（2）句子的谓语必须由动词充当，所以也叫做谓语动词。
（3）及物动词后必须接宾语。同时也说明了为什么不及物动词没有被动结构(不及物动词短语用作及物动词，现在先不用讲述)。因为被动就是把及物动词的宾语做了主语，然后把谓语前面加上be动词，主动结构的主语放在by后，不及物动词没有宾语，所以也就没有被动。
