小升初英語考查的題型分為兩大類：客觀題及主觀題，客觀題包括聽力，辨音，單項選擇，完形填空，閱讀理解，補全對話等題型，主觀題包括翻譯句子，用單詞適當形式填空，寫作等十幾種題型。鑒於小升初過程中英語考試時間及組織形式的局限性，客觀題在小升初考試中所佔比重較大，至少佔卷面總分的60%以上，其中又以單項選擇（考查語法及英語綜和運用），完形填空（考查英語綜合運用）及閱讀理解（考查英語閱讀能力）所佔比重最大，這三個題型總分至少佔卷面總分40%以上。
在小升初過程中重點中學的考試均由重點中學學校教師命題，考查的最終目的也是為了挑選能在中考乃至高考中英語有潛力取得高分的優秀學員，因此小升初英語的整體考試方向為中學英語，約為中考或是高一高二的考試題型。這與三筆、四口的考試體系都是十分不同的。
各個重點學校在命題上有較大不同，但基本難度分為四檔（以北京為例）。
第一檔難度：代表學校為北師大附屬實驗中學英語實驗班考試難度，其小升初英語考試難度約為高一下水平。
第二檔難度：代表學校為西城四中，八中等注重英語的難度。其小升初英語考試難度約為高一水平。
第三檔難度：代表學校為海淀市重點學校及西城的其他市重點學校，其小升初英語考試難度約為中考英語水平。
第三檔難度：代表學校為區重點學校，其小升初英語考試難度約為初二下水平
