這是美國強生公司的牙線廣告。眾所周知,使用牙線是為了保持口腔清潔,從而起到預防蛀牙的危險,廣告正是從這一點出發,廣告語中使用的「line」一語雙關,既指「清潔牙齒的牙線」,又指「預防牙病的防線」,這使消費者一目瞭然。而且廣告具有鼓動性,廣告用語極盡誇張,即使用本產品就可「築起牙齦疾病最堅固的防線」從而達到廣告宣傳的目的。

In this thesis differences in pronunciation, spelling, vocabulary, grammar and usage will be discussed. Probably the major difference between British and American English lies in the choice of vocabulary. Some words mean different things in the two varieties. Although they are different in so many aspects, the largest difference is probably that of the choice of vocabulary and pronunciation. The following is my poor view of this topic

英語廣告中多使用常見的單音節詞,如:be, make, get, give, like, love, buy, need, use, hear, see, do, have, go, come, know, keep, look, take, feel, start, save, taste, suit, try, call, choose, last, find, let, help, mean, meet, build, reach, prove, show. 這些單音節動詞簡潔明快,生動活潑,節奏感強。英國著名語言學家Leech(1996: 154)指出:大多數常用動詞表示消費者同產品的相互關系。Get, buy, have, take, keep 表示消費者獲得或擁有產品;use, have 表示使用關系;meet, suit同廣告產品的適用性相聯系;like, feel, need表達消費者對產品的心理傾向;feel, taste描述消費者對產品的感受;help, last, prove, mean, show體現產品功能時使用的動詞。例如:

a. Things go better with Coca-Cola. (Coca-Cola) 飲可口可樂,萬事如意。

b. A diamond lasts forever. (De Bierres) 鑽石恆久遠,一顆永流傳。(第比爾斯)

c. Feel the new space. 感受新境界。(三星電子)

d. Just do it. 只管去做。(耐克運動鞋)

上述4則廣告中使用的詞彙都是英語中的常用詞(go, last, feel, do),go better with 輕快明了地說服消費者可口可樂是優先選擇,last forever則體現第比爾斯鑽石寓意永久,feel the new space是電子時代人們的新感受,just do it簡短有力地表達了耐克品牌高效、堅定的運動品質。這些詞彙使任何教育程度的觀眾一目瞭然。

商業廣告更加有力地吸引觀眾的注意和興趣,引發其購買沖動,必須使用大眾化語言,通俗易懂,富有表現力,便於人們記憶。例如:

a.

--Is microwave cooking fast?

--You bet!

「You bet!」 極為口語化的表達,相當於Certainly或Sure.

b.

-- I couldn』t believe it until I tried it.

-- you』ve gotta try it.

-- I love it.

這是一則推銷微波爐的廣告,用詞簡單,口語性強,gotta在美語中相當於got to,親切自然真實。社會成員,不論男女老少受教育程度高低,都是潛在的生活必需品的消費者,因此此類商品的廣告語言必須大眾化,能夠琅琅上口。

杜撰新短語

First of all, because now Yoplait is thicker.

Third of all, because it』s still 100% natural and really very good for you.

酸奶廣告中,創作者根據First of all造出Second of all, Third of all,強調質量之高,並用省略號意味其優點數不勝數。
