下列英語作文的目標和要求是學生在寫作文時首要要達到的：
1.首段引人：
盡自己最大的可能使得第一自然段引人入勝，做到「語不驚人誓不休」。要想做到這一點，就要求學生要大量地閱讀課外書籍，包括中文和英文，做到知識面寬泛，觀點靈活，寫技高超。
2.片語句型：
在英語作文中，片語和句型的運用可幫助呈現寫作者的英語水平。這就要求學生要在基礎知識方面進行系統的學習。現舉例說明：

所謂的轉聯詞是指那些用於承上啟下的副詞，連詞以及大量的介詞片語等。英語作文中轉聯詞的必要使用，可以使得句子與句子之間更加流暢，避免了各個句子的分割獨立，使得文章順理成章，一氣呵成。中國學生在學習中，掌握了大量的此類單詞和片語，但除了but,because,等，很少主動使用，使得所寫文章頗顯乾巴和唐突。
5.時態：
毋庸置疑，時態是英語基礎知識的重要范疇之一，也是區別於漢語的重要特點之一。而英語作文又是對學生綜合能力的考核。因而，在作文中，必須加入時態的准確運用，才能使自己的觀點和所敘述的情節更加精準。因為中文中沒有時態的概念，中國學生極易在英語時態方面出現失誤或忽略事態的運用，這將是所寫的英語作文大打折扣。
6.漢譯英：

2.逐句翻譯
完成對單詞的推理之後，就必須練習將整個的句子翻譯成靈活的漢語，有助於對文章整體的把握。在這一步中，要求學生要有靈活的英譯漢的能力，堅決反對按著英語單詞去「磕」漢語。同時，在英譯漢過程中，要求學生要有廣博的課外知識，才能掌握各句乃至整篇文章的含義。
3.語法總結
在平時的訓練中,還應對文章中所出現的語法內容進行學習和復習。無庸置疑，每篇閱讀理解文章都是不錯的學習資料，同時，文章所涉及的內容也應認真學習，它極有可能成為未來閱讀理解內容，應該將其看作是豐富自己課外信息的寶貴機會。要倡導整體全面的學習，而不應為做題而做題。
4.自我創作
英語學習講究的是綜合系統的學習，而不能僅僅是單一的訓練。當閱讀理解文章中出現片語，句型以及習語時，學習者應該利用此機會進行自我的創作練習，從模仿，仿造他人的句子，逐漸形成自己的語言模式，也既英語的思維方式。
5.熟讀全文

總之，無論是英語作文，還是閱讀理解都必須在大量的課外閱讀的基礎上，才能有明顯的進步。此兩項英語語言能力毫無任何捷徑而言。
