打電話交流比較昂貴，所以很多人選擇發簡訊。 發簡訊比打電話便宜，你可以通過縮短單詞，讓簡訊更加便宜。你可以把單詞中「不重要的」字母去掉，用數字來代替，通過這種方法來縮短單詞: 2=to（因為two和to的發音相近，可以用數字2來代替介詞to），3=free（數字three和f自由ree發音相近，拼寫相近），4=for（數字four和為了...for發音相近），所以h8=hate（憎恨hate的「ate」和數字eight的發音相近，所以h8=h+eight=hate）。你可以通過省略標點符號縮短單詞。舉個例子：Do U wnt 2 g 2 cnma tnite是Do you want to go to the cinema tonight（今晚你想去電影院么？）的縮寫。
