Answer the questions(根據短文內容回答下列問題): (6%)
He knew colors and shapes. He learned about 150 English words. With his language ability, he was known as perhaps the world』s most famous talking bird.
But two weeks ago, Alex, an African Grey Parrot, died of old age. He was 31. Irene Pepperberg, a scientist at Harvard University, studied and worked with the parrot for most of its life.
In 1976, Pepperberg, a doctoral student at Harvard, bought the new-born bird from a pet shop. At that time, scientists didn』t think that any bird could learn to communicate with humans.
Using new ways of teaching, Pepperberg helped Alex to learn about 150 words, and to count small numbers as well as colors and shapes.
In experiments, Pepperberg would ask one trainer to compete (比賽) with Alex for small prizes like a grape. Alex learned to ask for the grape by watching what the trainer was doing to get it. The researchers then worked with the bird to help with pronunciation.
Alex showed a surprising ability to learn. For example, when he was shown a blue triangle (三角形), he could tell what color the paper was, what shape it was, and after touching it—what it was made of.
Like other parrots, he also learned some expressions in the lab such as 「calm down」 and 「Good morning」. He could express feelings like joy and anger. Once ring one training class, he suddenly stopped and said: 「wanna go eat dinner.」
Even up to the week he died, Alex was working with Pepperberg on hard-to-pronounce words. As she put him in the cage for the night, Alex looked at her and said: 「You be good. See you tomorrow. I love you.」
He was found dead in his cage the next morning.
1. What is Alex?
2. Where did Irene Pepperberg get Alex?
3. In which year did Alex die?
4. What caused the death of Alex?
5. Alex could use simple words to communicate with humans, couldn』t he?
6. What was he able to do after touching the blue paper triangle?

Mrs. White loves flowers and has a small but beautiful garden. In summer, her roses are always the best in the street. One summer afternoon her bell rang and when she went to the front door, she saw a Littley outside. He was about seven years old, and was holding a big bunch of beautiful roses in his hand. 「I』m selling roses,」 he said, 「don』t you want some? They are cheap. One shilling for a big bunch. They are fresh.」
「My boy,」 Mrs. White answered, 「I picked roses when I want, and don』t pay anything for because I have many in my garden.」 「Oh, no, you haven』t,」 said the little boy. 「There aren』t any roses in your garden-they are in my hand!」

Popular music in America is what every student likes. Students carry small radios with earphones and listen to music before class and at lunch. Students with cars buy large speakers and play the music loudly as they drive on the street.
Alt drivers listen to music on the car radio as they drive to work. They also listen to the news about sports, the weather, and life of American people. Most of the radio programmers are music.
Pop or popular music singers make much money. They make a CD or tape which radio stations use in many places. Once the popular singer is heard all over the country, young people buy his or her tape. Some of the money from these tapes comes to the singer. Wherever the singer goes, all the younger people wants to meet him or her. Now the singer has become a national star.
There are other kinds of music that are important to Americans. One is called folk music. It tells stories about the common life of Americans. Another is called western or country music. This was started by cowboys who would sing at night to the cows they were watching. No one likes the mosquito. But the mosquito may decide if she loves you. She? Yes, she. The male mosquito doesn』t bite! Only the female mosquito bites because she needs blood to lay eggs. She is always looking for things or people she wants to bite. If she likes what she finds, she bites. But if she doesn』t like your blood, she will turn to someone else for more delicious blood. Next time a mosquito bites you, just remember you are chosen. You』re different from the others!

Do you know why different animals or pests(昆蟲) have their special colours? Colours in them seem to be used mainly to protect themselves.
Some birds like eating locusts(蝗蟲), but birds cannot easily catch them. Why? It is because locusts change their colours together with the change of the colours of crops(莊稼). When crops are green, locusts look green. But as the harvest (收獲)time comes, locusts change to the same brown colour as crops have. Some other pests with different colours from plants are easily found and eaten by others. So they have to hide themselves for lives and appear only at night.
If you study the animal life, you』ll find the main use of colouring is to protect themselves. Bears, lions and other animals move quietly through forests. They cannot be easily seen by hunters. This is because they have the colours much like the trees.
Have you ever found an even more strange act? A kind of fish in the sea can send out a kind of very black liquid(液體) when it faces danger. While the liquid spreads over(散開), its enemies(敵人) cannot find it. And it immediately swims away. So it has lived up to now though it is not strong at all.
( )56.From the passage we learn that locusts________.
A. are small animals
B. are easily found by birds
C. are dangerous to their enemies
D. change their colours to protect themselves
( )57.How can pests with different colours from plants keep out of danger?

Another major work by Lu Xun is Wild Grass or Ye Cao a collection of prose poems. These were written in 1924 and 1926, roughly the same time period the stories of Wandering were being written. Some might consider some of the poems in Wild Grass to be his most pessimistic or macabre. I'd say "yes and no" to this. He writes in the introction:
The fire under the Earth churns, quickly moving up; once the lava gushes forth, it will burn away all the wild grass, as well as the deep-rooted plants, then there will be nothing left to rot.
Translated by Wang/Gallaher

Wild Grass is a work of dreams, including nightmares. Dogs speak, insects buzz and the sky tries to hide itself from us, the onlookers

A private conversation
Last week I went to the theatre. I had a very good seat. The play was very interesting. I did not enjoy it. A young man and a young woman were sitting behind me. They were talking loudly. I got very angry. I could not hear the actors. I turned round. I looked at the man and the woman angrily. They did not pay any attention. In the end, I could not bear it. I turned round again. 'I can't hear a word!' I said angrily. 『It』s none of your business,' the young man said rudely. 'This is a private conversation!'.
Lesson 3 Please send me a card
Postcards always spoil my holidays. Last summer, I went to Italy. I visited museums and sat in public gardens. A friendly waiter taught me a few words of Italian. 'Then he lent me a book. I read a few lines, but I did not understand a word. Every day I thought about postcards. My holidays passed quickly, but I did not send any cards to my friends. On the last day I made a big decision. I got up early and bought thirty-seven cards. I spent the whole day in my room, but I did not write a single card!

He is working for a big firm and he has already visited a great number of different places in Australia. He has just bought an Australian car and has gone to Alice Springs, a small town in the centre of Australia. He will soon visit Darwin. From there, he will fly to Perth. My brother has never been abroad before, so he is finding this trip very exciting.
The plane was late and detectives were waiting at the airport all morning. They were expecting a valuable parcel of diamond from South Africa. A few hours earlier, someone had told the police that thieves would try to steal the diamonds. When the plane arrived, some of the detectives were waiting inside the main building while others were waiting on the airfield. Two men took the parcel off the plane and carried it into the Customs House. While two detectives were keeping guard at the door, two others opened the parcel. To their surprise, the precious parcel was full of stones and sand!
Lesson 8 The best and the worst
Joe Sanders has the most beautiful garden in our town. Nearly everybody enters for 'The Nicest Garden Competition' each year, but Joe wins every time. Bill Frith's garden is larger than Joe's. Bill works harder than Joe and grows more flowers and vegetables, but Joe's garden is more interesting. He has made neat paths and has built a wooden bridge over a pool. I like gardens too, but I do not like hard work. Every year I enter for the garden competition too, and I always win a little prize for the worst garden in the town!

Lesson 9 A cold welcome
On Wednesday evening, we went to the Town Hall. It was the last day of the year and a large crowd of people had gathered under the Town Hall clock. It would strike twelve in twenty minutes' time. Fifteen minutes passed and then, at five to twelve, the clock stopped. The big minute hand did not move. We waited and waited, but nothing happened. Suddenly someone shouted, 'It's two minutes past twelve! The clock has stopped!' I looked at my watch. It was true. The big clock refused to welcome the New Year. At that moment everybody began to laugh and sing.
Lesson20 One man in a boat
Fishing is my favorite sport. I often fish for hours without catching anything. But this does not worry me. Some fishermen are unlucky. Instead of catching fish, they catch old boots and rubbish. I am even less lucky. I never catch anything-not even old boots. After having spent whole mornings on the river, I always go home with an empty bag. 'You must give up fishing!' my friends say.' It's a waste of time.' But they don't realize one important thing. I'm not really interested in fishing. I am only interested in sitting in a boat and doing nothing at all!
Late in the afternoon, the boys put up their tent in the middle of a field. As soon as this was done, they cooked a meal over an open fire. They were all hungry and the food smelt good. After a wonderful meal, they told stories and sang songs by the camp fire. But some time later it began to rain. The boys felt tired so they pet out the fire and crept into their tent. Their sleeping-bags were warm and comfortable, so they all slept soundly. In the middle of the night, two boys woke up and began shouting. The tent was full of water! They all leapt out of their sleeping-bags and hurried outside. It was raining heavily and they found that a stream had formed in the field. The stream wound its way across the field and then flowed right under their tent!

Do you think you will have your own robot?
What can you see in the videos and pictures?
What do these robots look like?
What can they do?
Do you remember what you were doing?
Maybe you should learn to relax! Pushy parents are nothing new, but now parents seem to push their children a lot more.pushy這個單詞在文中的意思不是很容易理解,但是當把整個文章閱讀完就會了解到英美國的學生沒有什麼自己的時間可以放鬆,那麼就可以理解這個詞的意思。
