The professor’ssalary is higher than that of a clerk.

7. but作介词表示“除…之外”时，可以接不定式做宾语，而不定式带不带to要看前面有没有do。前有do，后不用to。我们暂且把这叫做介词but接不定式时的do to不相容原则
