( 1) Abstract: Metropolitan Detroit ( USA) is underlain by unconsolidated sediments of glacial,-lacustrine and fluvial origin. These sediments form a complex series of confined aquifers overlain by an extensive unconfined surficial aquifer. All surface w ater w ithin metropolitan Detroit originates from this complex system of aquifers. Groundw ater w ithin the near-surface unconfined aquifer discharges directly into the Rouge River, the dominant river in the metropolitan area. The Rouge River is a major tributary to the Detroit River,w hich empties into Lake Erie. Thousands of sites of environmental contamination are located w ithin metropolitan Detroit. The combination of contaminated sites and near-surface groundw ater that flow s and discharges into the Rouge River creates a significant potential for contamination to eventually migrate to the Great Lakes. The Rouge River is currently identified as an area of concern by the International Joint Commission ( IJC ) and represents a significant source of pollution to the Great Lakes. Key words: Near-surface aquifer; glacial deposits; urban environment; groundwater; environmental contamination

( 2) Abstract: The ability of sea water to flow into coastal or submarine cavities is surprising,in view of the fact that sea level is,for w ater,a level of minimum gravitational potential w here it can perform no w ork. To achieve a low er potential requires energy, the provision of w hich is an example of a completely original aspect of the interaction betw een subterranean hydrodynamics and marine hydraulics. We have studied a spectacular example of the simultaneous outflow of fresh w ater and inflow of salt w ater at a karstic spring running into a salt-w ater lagoon on the French Mediterranean coast, and w e suggest here a hypothesis to account for the surprising double-layered,tw o-directional flow observed. Key words: Limestone aquifer; karstic spring; salt water; fresh water; simultaneous flow

( 3) Abstract: In north-central Oregon a large area of near-zero near-surface conctive heat flow occurs in young volcanic rocks of the Cascade Rage. Recent advective heat flux measurements and a heat-budget analysis suggest that groundw ater circulation sw eeps sufficient heat out of areas w here rocks younger than 6 Ma ( million years ago) are exposed to account for the anomalously high advective and conctive heat discharge measured in older rocks at low er elevations. Earlier w orkers have proposed that an extensive midcrustal magmatic heat source is responsible for this anomalously high heat flow. Instead, high heat flow in the older rocks may be a relatively shallow phenomenon caused by regional groundw ater flow. Any deeper anomaly may be relatively narrow ,spatially variable, and essentially confined to the Quaternary ( less than 2 Ma) arc. Magmatic intrusion at a rate of 9 to 33 cubic kilometers per kilometer of arc length per million years can account for the total heat flow anomaly. Deep drilling in the areas of high heat flow in the older rocks could indicate w hich model is more appropriate for the near- surface heat flow data. Key words: Conctive heat flow ; water circulation; hot spring; thermal groundwater; magmatic intrusion

( 4) Abstract: Fresh water aquifers in small coral islands usually occur as thin lenses w hich are significantly influenced by stresses such as groundw ater pumping, sea tides, etc. Kavaratti,a coral island,is one of the 36 such islands in the Arabian Sea off the w estern coast of India. Detailed hydrogeological investigations w ere carried out to determine the quantity of fresh w ater that could be pumped in addition to the present usage. Salinity of groundw ater must remain w ithin permissible limits and a 2-D solute mass transport model w ith a vertical section of the island w as constructed by the computer code SUTRA. The model w as calibrated by obtaining a match of computed and observed values of the w ater table, tidal efficiency, and salinity of groundw ater at the w ater table. The model analysis show ed that the salinity of groundw ater continues to increase unless groundw ater pumping is kept below a certain rate. Groundw ater potential can be augmented by recing the subsurface outflow to the sea and by raising the w ater table by a subsurface dam.

Key words: Island; water table; tidal effect; abstraction; sea water intrusion

Lesson 71
1. b
If the Houses of Parliament had not been burned down in 1834 可以判斷只有b.
Officials from Greenwich Observatory have the clock checked twice a day
a. will visit c. have visited , d. will be visiting
a. famousest 不是正確的最高級形式,famous 的最高級應該是the most famous; c. the more famous:比較級前不應該有定冠詞,另外本句也沒有表示比較的連詞than; d. famouser 不是正確的比較級形式。
5. c
本句若選a. and, b. also, d. together都不合乎語法,也不符合題目意思,只有選c. both才合乎語法,意思通順.所以選c.
6. c
該句是疑問句,因此需要用疑問句的語序,b. they have it 和d. they do have it 都是陳述句語序,所以都不能選;a. have they it 意思不完整;只有c. do they have it 是疑問句語序而且符合題目意思,所以選c.
7. d
a. who, b. had been, c. had
12. a
went slowly 慢慢地走,和前一句的the clock slowed down(鍾變慢了)意思不同.
只有a. was slow(慢了)和前一句意思相符合,所以選a. 而b. was behind(在後面), c. went back(回去), d. went slowly(慢慢地走)都與前一句含義不符合.
Lesson 72
1. a
3. a
a. how long ago
c. how length語法錯誤
d. how long 是對長度提問的,
5. b
a. It was difficulty for him 和c. It was difficult for him 最合乎語法,所以選b.
6. a
b. with, c. to , d. by 都不能引出表示速度的短語,只有a.
8. c
該句需要選一個與前一句中的set up(創立)意義相同的動詞才能與前一句含義相同.a. did(做), b. played(玩), d. found(發現)這3個選擇都不是set up 的同義詞.只有c. created(創造)與set up 含義相同, created a record 和 set up a record 都有創紀錄的意思,所以選c.
9. d
b. tall(高的)和c. large(大的)都不符合題目意思.
11. a
本句需要一個與前一句中的disappointed(失望的,不滿意的)含義相同的詞. a. sorry(惋惜的,遺憾的), b. hopeless(無望的,絕望的), c. despair(絕望,灰心), d. desperate(拚命的,絕望的)4個選擇中只有a.
b. correct(正確的), c. right(對的)都與mistake 含義相反,因此都不準確.

Skin-Diving
To be a good skin-diver it is not essential to be a top-class swimmer. If you can swim reasonably well use good equipment and take normal safety precautions, a whole new world of adventure and underwater beauty can be yours to explore.

The normal basic equipment required consists of fins, and a snorkel tube, a mask and (if desired) a nose-clip. The functions of each equipment were introced. With this equipment a lot of pleasure can be had merely by swimming on thesurface in fairly shallow water.

For skin-diver at greater depths than 20-30 feet, special aqua-lung equipment is needed. With an ordinary aqua-lung depths of 350 feet have been reached, and may be exceeded. The use of this method needs a lot of practice and training that can be obtained from qualified divers in a sub aqua club.
