1、如果單詞的復最後一個字母是元制音並且發音的話，要用』d來代替ed。例如ski的過去式會寫成ski』d。
2、在古詩中，非重讀的e，以及the里的e也可以用』代替。彌爾頓的《失樂園》中幾乎每一段都有這樣的句子，例如：Up into Heav'n from Paradise in haste.
3、不以s結尾的名詞，直接加』s，無論單復數，只要名詞的最後一個字母不是s，它的所有格直接加』s就可以了。例如：Tom』s car，the BBC』s program，people』s choice.
