萬丈高樓平地起。足夠的詞彙量是學生進行課文理解，課外閱讀和英語寫作的基礎。在平時的英語教學中，教師要求學生堅持對每一單元的單詞、短語、重點句型進行聽寫，並且根據遺忘規則，循環記憶。教師還要善於指導學生將所學的單詞進行總結歸類，使學生在融會貫通之間掌握更為豐富的單詞儲備。
例如：在表達「喜歡」涵義時，可採用以下表達：I like---, I love---, I enjoy---, My favorite---.

對於英語學習者來說，多聽不如多說，多說不如多寫。要想提高英語寫作能力，勤於寫作時必不可少的。筆者要求學生每天用英語寫四個句子，即「每日四句」，內容不限，可以是學生自己的所見所聞，也可以利用某一語法結構造句，教師及時給學生批閱。長期堅持下來，學生的英語寫作確實有所提高，所學的語法知識也能夠靈活運用。除了練習英語句子，筆者還要求學生每周寫一篇英語作文，並適時地教給他們一些過渡詞。例如，在表達觀點或提出建議時，可用first of all, next, then, finally等詞，條理清晰，簡單明了；表達轉折關系時，可用but, however；表達因果關系時，可用so,therefore, as a result 等；總結時可用in a word, as is known to all 等過渡詞。所用過渡詞對整篇文章具有承上啟下的作用，使行文流暢。
4. 採用多種方法批改學生作文
文章不厭百回改。教師對學生的習作進行修改，從而能使學生的習作水平得到大幅度提升。筆者通常採用以下方式批改學生作文：第一，課後統一收齊作文本批改。這種方式大大節約了課堂時間，同時，老師還可以在作文本上寫上適當的批語。比如Well, your handwriting is very beautiful,but would you please pay attention to some words mistakes? You have made great progressin writing. Please keep working.等等類似的句子經常出現在學生的作文本上，激勵學生寫作，使學生變「要我寫」為「我要寫」，轉「我要寫」為「我樂寫」。第二，當面批改。一邊批改，一邊給學生講評。這樣可以使學生更加全面地了解自己在寫作中存在的問題，明白該如何改進和提升。第三，學生互評。學生以小組為單位，對組員的習作互相評論，集合眾人的觀點來彌補自己的不足。教師適時把優秀的作文當作範文讓學生來模仿寫作，既激發了學生的寫作興趣，也增加了他們的成就感。
