怎樣短期內記住大量單詞？背單詞可快可慢，各有所長，亦有所短。不過細嚼慢咽的方法我們多數人中學以來已操練多時，可謂輕車熟路。相比之下，要在短時間內記住大量的單詞就更需要一點技巧。主要就是針對增加被動詞彙量而言的。艾賓浩斯記憶曲線現在經常被提及，雖然它在某種程度上充當了商家炒作的作料。但是就這個東西本身而言，倒是實實在在的統計科學的產物。人的記憶就是這么個類似指數曲線的規律，在你剛剛看過大量的單詞之後，短期內會忘掉其中的大部分，而遺忘的速度是在逐漸下降的。所以，越是新近學習的東西，越要抽出時間復習一下。督促自己復習，可以用一點技巧。比如你想背一本toefl詞彙，有整整幾十個word list。可以先准備一張日歷，上面每一天都對應著一個格子。如果某一天你背了list 1，2和3，就在那天的格子中寫上「1，2，3」，然後再朝後面一格格數過去，在後面第1，2，4，7，15，30天的格子里都寫上「1，2，3」。然後，以後每天在背單詞之前，都先看看這一天的格子里寫的數字，把相應的詞彙復習一下。背了新單詞之後，把復習的日期填到表中。這樣，其實就是用一種程序化的方式貫徹了記憶曲線的意圖。每天背多少新的單詞，究竟要不要背新單詞，可以根據這一天復習的工作量有多大而定，我不是很贊成在製表之初就把每一天新單詞的工作量制訂好，因為那樣你會發現，幾天過後，光是復習舊單詞就夠你受的了。注意，重要的是復習，即使沒有時間背新的單詞，也要把要復習的單詞看上一遍，不復習就等於前面根本就沒有背過。至於每次背新的單詞可以背多少，我看是不必強求的。一般來講，詞彙量尚小的人，一次可以記住的新單詞不會太多，二三十個也就可以了，而對於已經有一定詞彙基礎的人，有了詞根詞綴同義詞的幫助，加上對詞形的熟悉，一次背上百個新單詞，也是可以的。
