本單元從文章的第二個要素入手，著重討論英語文章的宏觀結構，即寫作說明文或議論文的開頭、中間和結尾。首先我們要對學生習作的體裁進行判斷，即是說明文還是議論文，然後在與寫作規則或慣例的比較中找出習作中的優缺點，指出文章結構的基本原則，使學生明了英語文章結構的特點。最後，對英美作家的範文進行分析。本單元主要回答以下問題：
1．英語文章的結構是由哪些部分組成的? 2．英語文章結構的每一個部分有那些功能? 3．什麼是說明文和議論文?
