歐拉解決的問題實在太多了，解決問題過程中創造出的方法不知開創了多少個數學分支。歐拉因為解決著名的七橋問題開創了拓撲學，歌德巴赫猜想是因為歌德巴赫和歐拉的通信而出名的。任何一個正整數都一定能寫成不超過四個平方數之和是歐拉最早證明的，這可是將近兩千年無人解決的問題。數論，幾何，力學，天體力學，到處留下歐拉的足跡。現代數學的符號和表達式，如三角，指數，e，i，π 等等，都是歐拉創立的。歷史上第一本流行的微積分教科書也是歐拉寫的。後來所有的微積分教科書，或者是抄襲歐拉的，或者是抄襲抄襲歐拉的。
歐拉研究數學，就像人在呼吸，鳥在飛翔一樣自由和自在。
歐拉早就發現了『變分法'可是當他發現法國人拉格朗日也有這類思想時，就把自己的藏起來不發表，把出名的機會留給年輕人。
