這篇課文是根據我國著名古典歷史小說《三國演義》中有關「草船借箭」的情節改寫的。草船借箭的故事發生在東漢末年，曹操、劉備、孫權各為一方。當時曹操剛剛打敗劉備，又派兵進攻孫權，於是劉備和孫權聯合起來抵抗曹操。劉備派諸葛亮到孫權那裡幫助作戰。諸葛亮「草船借箭」的故事就是在孫、劉聯合抗曹的時候發生的。課文寫周瑜由於妒忌諸葛亮的才幹，要諸葛亮在十天內造好十萬支箭，以此陷害他。諸葛亮同周瑜鬥智，用妙計向曹操「借箭」，挫敗了周瑜的暗算，表現了諸葛亮有膽有識，才智過人。
按照事情發展的順序，課文先寫了草船借箭的原因；接著寫了諸葛亮做草船借箭的准備；然後重點寫了草船借箭的經過；最後寫了事情的結果——箭如期如數交付周瑜，周瑜自嘆弗如。
諸葛亮，是文中著力贊美的人物，周瑜稱其「神機妙算」。引導學生領悟諸葛亮的「神機妙算」是本課教學的重點。就本課的內容來看，諸葛亮的神機妙算主要表現在以下幾個方面。
對周瑜險惡用心的瞭然於胸。當周瑜提出請他十天造十萬支箭時，他已看透了周瑜意欲加害的用心，因為十天無論如何也「造」不出十萬支箭。但他不動聲色，出人意料地提出只要三天，並按周瑜意願立下軍令狀。周瑜大喜過望，以為陰謀得逞，實際上諸葛亮早有妙計在胸。
對借箭妙計的通盤考慮和周到安排。他算到了天氣，知道第三天四更時分一定有大霧；他算好了受箭的方法，二十條船以繩索相連，一字排開，兩面受箭；他也算好了人，知道魯肅忠厚守信，特向他借船，知道周瑜聰明過人，所以不讓魯肅向周瑜提借船之事，知道曹操謹慎多疑，看不清虛實不會輕易出兵，因而大張旗鼓，霧夜佯攻曹營；他甚至算到了周瑜取箭後必然疑惑，但絕不會直問原因，所以請魯肅同船取箭，做個見證，回去好向周瑜講述取箭經過，給周瑜一個迎頭悶擊，讓他清醒地看到自己陰謀的慘敗。
就在這種看似平靜、談笑風生中，諸葛亮輕松取勝，又不至於和周瑜發生正面沖突，顧全了孫劉聯合的大局。
