1.審題：作文評分的第一個要求就是內容切題，因此審題特別關鍵。四級作文都是專命題屬作文，而且多有中文提示或提綱，所以你首先應了解命題的基本要求，理解題目的真正意圖，然後確定提綱中的關鍵詞及各要點間的邏輯，整理自己的思路，對自己所想到的內容進行組織和全面安排。尤其對要討論的問題，該涉及的內容，所需的事實、例證、闡述、說明和總結等，在頭腦中形成一個整體的構思。
2.組織段落：構思好之後，根據構思的提綱，運用選好的材料，恰當地運用連詞，合理安排段落，使文章條理清楚、內容連貫。段落的組織主要是通過擴展句對主題句的支持或說明來進行的。各段的主題句在審題構思時就應基本形成，主題句確定下來，接著就是通過一系列的擴展句，來說明、論證或闡述主題句的思想。常見的段落展開方法有列舉、舉例、比較和對比、因果、敘述、歸類、下定義等，考試時應靈活運用。
3.修改：也就是說要刪除與主題不相乾的內容，檢查句子時態、語態等。特別應注意單詞的正確拼寫；字母大小寫和標點符號；數的一致性（包括主語與謂語以及名詞與其限定語的單復數一致性）；指代關系（包括指代的一致性和代詞的選用）；動詞形式（時態、語態、語氣）等方面。
