Language Point 1

Language Point 32

1) sth. that one can put tobacco in to smoke 烟斗
Sitting in the sun, he began to fill his pipe. 坐在太阳底下,他开始往烟斗里装烟丝。
2)sth. that takes water, oil, gas, etc. from one place to another (输送气体或液体的)管子
The running water flows along a pipe to our houses. 自来水通过管道流入我们家。

Language Point 33  

"We think you have ignored a rather obvious way for someone to hide great wealth." (Para.5)
Meaning: … we think you have not paid attention to quite a clear way for someone to put great wealth out of sight.

Language Point 34  

Your brother-in-law has just been found murdered. (Para.7)
brother-in-law: n. [C]  the brother of one’s husband or wife; the husband of one’s sister 内兄;内弟;姐夫;妹夫
I was wondering whether my brother-in-law has arrived in America safely. 我不知道我的姐夫是否已平安到达美国。
My brother-in-law only learnt of his son’s marriage long after the event. 我的姐夫在很久以后才得知儿子结婚的事。

Language Point 35

come over: make a short informal visit 短暂造访;顺便来访
They have invited us to come over to Australia for a holiday. 他们邀请我们去澳大利亚度假。

Language Point 36

as to: about; concerning 关于;有关
I was given no instructions as to how to begin.  对于如何开始,没有人给我指示。
He is very uncertain as to whether it’s the right job for him.  关于这份工作是否适合他,他实在拿不准。

Meaning: Everyone knows that Mickey had some people who hated him and tried to harm him.

Language Point 38  

He did business with a cousin … (Para.11)
do business with: buy and sell goods with 同……做生意
They are very easy to do business with. 跟他们做生意很容易。

Language Point 39  

He did business with a cousin … (Para.11)
cousin: n. [C] the child of one’s aunt and uncle 表兄弟姐妹;堂兄弟姐妹
My cousin pushed me, and I fell into the water. 表哥推了我一下,我便掉到水里去了。
My cousin was going to ask the boss for more money, but he lost courage at the last minute. 我的堂兄打算让老板多给点钱,但在最后一刻失去了勇气。

Language Point 41

Meaning: Charles, I am rather ashamed to say, has several friends who often do things illegally.

Language Point 43

1) a noisy talk between people  争吵
He is always having rows with his wife about money. 他总是和妻子为了钱的事吵吵闹闹。
2. a line of people or things (人或物的)一排
They stood in a row to meet the President. 他们站成一排迎接总统。

it’s obvious: it’s clear 很明显
It was obvious that he was unwell. 很明显他不舒服。
It was obvious to everyone that he was lying. 每个人都明白他在撒谎。
It was obvious he knew the truth. 他显然知道真相。
