Language Point 1    

I can chill it for you right away. (Para. 1)
Meaning: I can make it cool for you at once.
chill: v. make cold; cool
Chill the mixed fruit dish until serving time. 吃之前把水果拼盘冷藏起来。
We can sit around and talk while waiting for the tea to chill. 我们围坐在一起边聊,边等茶凉下来。

  Language Point 2    

Five minutes later she emerged from the kitchen with the wine perfectly cooled. (Para.2)
Meaning: Five minutes later she came from the kitchen with the wine cooled to the right degree. 
Please notice that the word "perfectly" is often used to intensify an adjective or adverb.
The word can be deleted without changing the main idea of the sentence.
The guests were perfectly satisfied with the meal. 客人们对这顿饭非常满意。
They made it perfectly clear that it was useless to go on. 他们说得很清楚,再继续下去是没有用的。
They are perfectly safe to eat. 这些东西吃起来绝对安全。

  Language Point 3    

I poured it in a plastic bag and dipped it in ice water. (Para. 2)
Meaning: I poured the wine in a plastic bag and put it into icy water.
dip: v. lower or drop (something) into a liquid
They dip their food into the tomato liquid. 他们将食品蘸了一下番茄酱。
Ask the children to guess what's in each bottle by dipping their hands in. 叫孩子们把手伸进瓶子里,猜猜每个瓶子里面装的是什么。

  Language Point 4    

My guests applauded. "How wonderful if we could all be that clever," one remarked.(Para. 3)
Meaning: My guests clapped the hands and one of them commented that they wished they were clever enough to do that too.

My guests applauded. (Para. 3)
applaud: v. express good opinion or favour, especially by clapping the hands
The people applauded with joy as the singer waved to them. 当歌手向人们挥手时,大家高兴地鼓起掌来。
Everyone applauded loudly as they liked the President's speech. 人们热烈鼓掌,表示他们非常喜欢总统的讲话。

  Language Point 6    

...all be that clever,...(Para. 3)
As we have learned in Unit 2, you can use "that" to emphasize the degree of a feeling or quality. It's an informal use.
Do I look that stupid? 难道我看上去就那么愚蠢吗?
I can't walk that far. 我可走不了那么远的路。
I've done only that much.我所做的就那么多。
I was that angry I could have hit him. 我十分生气, 简直想揍他。
It isn't all that cold. 天气没有 冷到那种程度。

remark: vi. express a short  relaxed comment
Mrs. John remarked negatively about the actors and actresses. 约翰夫人把男女演员数落了一番。
remark: n. comment (usu. not formal)  
They invited Mr. Jackson to open the meeting and make a few opening remarks. 他们请杰克逊先生宣布会议开始,并讲几句开场白。

  Language Point 8    

A decade of enquiry has convinced me we can. (Para. 4)
Meaning: Through ten years of study and research I have been persuaded by facts that all of us can do the same.

enquiry: n. a close examination of a matter in a search for information or truth
During the enquiry, it was discovered that her death had not been an accident.在调查中,人们发现她并非死于意外事故。
The police enquiry into the death of Mr. Smith was not a success; they found no useful facts. 警方对于史密斯先生死因的调查并不成功, 没有发现有价值的情况。

  Language Point 10    

...has convinced me we can. (Para. 4)
convince: vt. bring by the use of arguing or facts to a firm belief or a course of action
I soon convinced him of my freedom from fault. 我很快就使他相信我是无辜的。
My wife convinced me to be more careful about spending money. 我夫人劝我花钱要谨慎一点。

  Language Point 11    

What separates the average person from Edison, Picasso or even Shakespeare isn't creative capacity. It's the ability to use that capacity by encouraging creative impulses and then acting upon them. (Para. 4)
Meaning: The difference between the average person and Edison, Picasso or even Shakespeare is not in creative capacity, but in the ability to use that capacity through encouraging creative impulses and acting according to them.

separate: vt. show the difference between
Higher living standards separate the older generation from their children. 生活水平的提高使老一辈人和他们的子女之间的关系疏远了。

capacity: n. 1. the ability to produce, experience, understand or learn sth.
Bob has a natural capacity for chemistry. 鲍勃天生就有化学才能。
2. the ability to hold or contain sth.
The room has a capacity for 60 people. 这个房间有可容纳60人。
The capacity of this bottle is one litre.  这个瓶子的容量是1公升。

  Language Point 13    

... encouraging creative impulses and then acting upon them. (Para. 4)
impulse: n. a sudden wish or urge
His friends advised him not to act on impulse and he should think carefully before his decision. 他的朋友劝告他不要意气用事,在作出决定之前应该慎重考虑。
Do not take it seriously; he did it out of impulse. 别把这当回事,这是他一时冲动所为。
act upon: act according to
Becoming more creative means paying attention to that endless flow of ideas you produce, and learning to capture and act upon the new that's within you. (Para. 16) 变得更有创造力意味着留意你头脑里的无穷无尽的想法,学会捕捉你脑子里的新想法并将其付诸行动。
A patient should usually listen to his doctor's advice and act upon it. 一般说来,病人应该听从医生的劝告,并照医生的意见做。

Most of us seldom achieve our creative potential but the reservoir of ideas hiding within every one of us can be unlocked. (Para. 4)
Meaning: Many of us do not use our creative mental abilities but the huge creative capacity within us can be brought into play.

  Language Point 15

potential: n. qualities that exist and can be developed
Young people have a potential for learning which, up to now, has been slighted. 年轻人具有学习的潜力,这一点至今仍未得到重视。
Australia has industry potential which is almost impossible to establish. 澳大利亚有着不可估量的工业潜力。
a. that may happen or become so, although, not actually existing at present
Because the weather here is very good for crops, this place has great potential wealth. 由于这儿的气侯适宜于农作物的生长,因此这个地方具有巨大的潜在财富。
Asia's potential water power is greater than that of the other continents. 亚洲潜在的水力资源比其他各洲要丰富。

  Language Point 16

reservoir: n. (figurative use) a large or extra supply; a nest egg or quantity that is held back
This book contains a reservoir of facts. 这本书中包含大量的知识。
This dictionary is a reservoir of information about the English language. 这本词典是一座英语语言的知识宝库。
Great literature is a reservoir of wise thinking. 伟大的文学是一座智慧的宝库。

  Language Point 17    

...concrete ways of increasing creativity: (Para. 5)
concrete: a. of or relating to a material thing or group of things as things rather than to an idea
I understood her lecture because she used concrete examples. 由于她运用了具体的事例,所以我能听懂她的讲座。
The concept he introduced was not easy for us to understand, as his thought was not followed by concrete facts. 他所介绍的概念对我们来说不容易理解,因为他没有运用具体的事例来说明他的观点。

  Language Point 18    

Capture the fleeting. (Para. 6)
Meaning: Some of the good ideas exist for a short time, so do not let them fly away. Be careful that "fleeting" is an adjective. Do not confuse this with two other different words: "flee" or "fleet".
Here "the fleeting" is used as a noun, meaning "passing ideas".
Here are some examples of "the definite article the + adj."
the unconscious(Para. 3, Passage A): the unconscious mind 潜意识
the blind 盲人
the deaf 聋子
the sick 病人
the unemployed 失业的人
the blamed 被告

  Language Point 19    

But scarcely did I awake when away flew the tune and I could not recall any part of it. (Para. 7)
Meaning: I had hardly awakened when the tune flew away and I could not remember any part of the tune.
awake: v. cause to stop sleeping, wake
Please pay special attention to its past tense and past particle in the following:
awake, awoke, awoke; or awake, awoke, awaken
When we express the idea of one thing happening immediately after another, we can use "hardly,' 'scarcely," followed by "when."
Scarcely had he arrived when he had to leave again. 他刚刚到达就又得走了。
Scarcely had he entered the room when the phone rang. 我刚一进屋电话铃就响了。
Hardly had I arrived when I had a new problem to deal with. 我刚到,就有新的问题要处理了。

  Language Point 20    

Fortunately, for Beethoven and for us, the next day in the same carriage, the tune returned to him and he captured it in writing. (Para. 7)
Meaning: It was lucky for Beethoven and for us that the next day in the same carriage the tune came back to Beethoven's mind again and he wrote it down at once.
fortunately: ad. by good chance; luckily
Fortunately, I got a ticket for the basketball match from a friend. 真幸运,我从朋友那里弄到了一张篮球赛的票。
The house burnt down; fortunately, no one was hurt.  房子烧了;幸运的是,没有人受伤。

  Language Point 21    

When a good idea comes your way, write it down-on your arm if necessary. (Para. 8)
Meaning: When an idea occurs to you, you must write it down and if necessary write it on your arm.
come one's way: occur so that one has it or gets it
You have to get yourself ready for any time; when a chance comes your way you can surely capture it. 你必须随时作好准备;一旦机会来了,你就能不失时机地抓住它。

  Language Point 22    

Not every idea will have value but capture it first and evaluate later. (Para. 8)
Meaning: Some ideas may have value but some others may not; we have to capture it first and make evaluation of it later.
evaluate: v. examine and judge carefully
Tests are used to evaluate students' progress in school. 考试被用来检验学生在学校所取得的进步。
After evaluating the patient's condition, the doctor decided to try a new drug.对病人的病情进行检查以后,医生决定试用一种新药。

  Language Point 23    

As he began to fall asleep, ...(Para. 9)
fall asleep: become asleep; go into a state of sleep
"Asleep" is an adjective that is used as a predicative (表语).  
One after another, all three of the children fell asleep. 三个小孩一个个地都睡着了。

  Language Point 24    

Shocked awake by the sound, he would immediately sketch the images seen in his mind in that fertile world of semi-sleep. (Para. 9)
Meaning: The sound woke him up, and then immediately he made a quick  drawing of the images in his mind. He had the images when he was almost asleep, which is a good source of creative ideas.
"Awake" is an adjective here; it is not a verb. In Paragraph 7 we have the same word used as a verb in "But scarcely did I awake when away flew the tune and I could not recall any part of it.".
"Shocked awake by the sound" is a past participle phrase placed at the beginning of the sentence. Other examples of similar structure:
Moved by their speech, we did not know what to say. 他们的话使我们很感动,我们不知说什么才好。
Encouraged by his example, hundreds of others began to work again. 在他的带动下,其他数以百计的人也开始工作了。

  Language Point 25    

Everyone experiences this strange state and can take advantage of it. (Para. 10)
We have come across the word "experience" used as a noun before, but here as you see it is used as a verb. If you "experience" a particular situation, you are in that situation or it happens to you. If you "experience" a feeling, you feel it or are affected by it.
Some of the students had experienced what hard times meant before they entered the university.有些大学生在进入大学之前体验过艰苦的生活。
Our country has experienced great changes in the last thirty years. 我国在过去30年中经历了巨大变化。
take advantage of: make use of
You should take advantage of living in a large city where most of the goods are convenient.  你应该享受大都市的生活, 那里 购买大多数商品都十分方便。
He took advantage of the meeting to express his opinion about current situations. 他利用会议机会表达了他对当前形势的看法。

  Language Point 26    

Try Dali's trick, ... (Para. 10)
Meaning: Use Dali's skill.
A "trick" means "a special skill" here.
John taught me the trick of pouring wine without dropping any. 约翰教了我倒酒时滴酒不洒的诀窍。
Is there a trick to getting this window to stay up? 有没有什么窍门能让窗户保持拉起着的状态?

  Language Point 27    

Often, the "three bs" —bed, bath and bus-are productive. (Para. 10)
Meaning: Often these three places that begin with the letter "b", that is, bed, bath and bus, help to produce good ideas.

  Language Point 28    

Anywhere you can be with your thoughts undisturbed, you'll find ideas emerge freely. (Para. 10)
Meaning: In any place you can think without being disturbed, good ideas will come to you freely.
Other examples of the use of "with" followed by past particle:
All the afternoon he worked with the door locked. 整个下午他都闭门工作。
She sat with her head bent. 她低头而坐。
She could not leave with her duty still not done. 她不能任务没有完成就离开。

Seek challenges. (Para. 11)
seek: try to find or acquire something
We sought an answer to the question, but couldn't find one. 我们寻求这个问题的答案,可是没能找到。
I will seek my doctor's advice. 我将听取医生的建议。
The couple have sought help from marriage advice advocates. 这对夫妇从婚姻指导顾问那里寻求帮助。

  Language Point 30    

Try inviting friends and business associates from different areas of your life to a party. (Para. 11)
try doing sth.: make an experiment; do something to see what will happen
I tried sending her flowers but it didn't have any effect. 我尝试着给她送花,但毫无作用。
Try putting some more wine in it; that might make it taste a bit better. 请尝试着多加一点酒,味道可能会好一点。
Compare: try to do sth.: make an effort; attempt to do something difficult
Please try to understand. 想办法弄懂。
I once I tried to learn Japanese. 有一度我曾设法学日语。

  Language Point 31    

Bringing people of different ages and social status together ... (Para. 11)
Meaning: Making plans to get people of different ages and social status together in one place....
We have learned the word "status" before; here are more examples:
social status 社会地位
the social status of women in China today 今日中国妇女的社会地位
status sign 地位的象征(判断他人地位或夸耀自己身份的事物或习惯)
a status seeker 想往上爬的人

  Language Point 32    

Edwin Land, one of America's most productive inventors, claimed the idea leading to his invention of the Polaroid camera came from his three-year-old daughter. (Para. 12)
Meaning: Edwin Land, one of America's most productive inventors stated that his idea of invention of the Polaroid camera came from his three-year-old daughter.
claim: state to be true, especially when open to question
She claimed she was the owner of the land, but her cousin challenged her claim. 她宣称自己为那块地的主人,但她的堂弟却提出了不同意见。
Watt claimed to be the inventor of the steam engine. 瓦特自称为蒸气发动机的发明者。
Most political officials claim that their policies will benefit large sections of the population. 大多数的政客都宣称他们的政策会使大部分人受益。

Meaning: Increase you knowledge and improve your understanding.

  Language Point 34    

Even though you can't reach both at once, is it possible to tie their ends together, using only a pair of pliers? (Para. 13)
Meaning: Even though you can't get both at the same time, do you think it possible to tie the two ends together with a pair of pliers?
at once: at the same time or all at one time
I can't do two things at once.我不能同时做两件事情。
She is at once clever and restrained. 她既聪明又谦虚。
end: the two "ends" of something long and narrow are the two points or parts of it that are furthest away from each other.
Every stick has two ends. 凡事总有利又有弊。
She's on the other end of the wire (or line).她在电话的另一端。
the end of one's nose 鼻子尖  
cigarette ends 香烟头

  Language Point 35    

set it in motion (Para. 14)
Meaning: start it moving
Pull this handle towards you to set the machine in motion. 拉动把手,启动机器。
Her sharp, aggressive tone set in motion the events that led to her defeat. 她那尖刻、带有进攻性的口吻引发了那最后导致她下台的事件。

  Language Point 36    

As it swung back and forth, ...(Para. 14)
Meaning: While it moved back and forward...
back and forth: move back and go ahead or forward
A pendulum swings back and forth.钟摆前后摆动。
He walked back and forth in his room waiting for the news from his son. 他在房间里走来走去,等候他儿子的消息。

  Language Point 37    

What he had learned in one context transferred to a completely different one. (Para. 15)
Meaning: He used what he had learned in one situation in a completely different situation.
context: n. 1. words that come before and after a word, phrase, statement, etc, helping to show what its meaning is
The context in which a word is used can help you understand it. 单词的语境会帮助你理解词义。
2. the general conditions in which an event, action, etc., takes place
This is the context in which the President must make his decision. 这一形势促使总统必须作出决定。
transfer: v. move from one location or job to another
He wanted to transfer some money to his daughter's account. 他想转一些钱到他女儿的帐户上。
Now the patient can transfer from the wheelchair to seat with relative freedom. 现在病人能比较容易地从轮椅转到坐凳上。

  Language Point 38    

This principle works elsewhere as well. (Para. 16)
Meaning: This principle is effective in other situations, too.
principle: n. a basic truth, law, or theory
In human friendship an important principle is "forgive and forget". 在人与人的关系中,重要的原则是"宽容与遗忘"。
One of the principles of modern economics is the principle of competition for values. 现代经济学的原则之一是价值竞争原则。
"Work" in this sentence means being successful or effective.
Your idea won't work in practice. 你的想法在实践中行不通。
It is no good trying that method, because it won't work. 尝试那种方法没有意义,因为它不起作用。

  Language Point 39    

The new will combine with the old in novel and potentially fascinating ways. (Para. 16)
Meaning: The new will combine with the old in new and possibly interesting ways.
"Novel" in this sentence is an adjective, meaning "new".
Flying gives people a novel feeling.飞行给人们一种新奇的感觉。
The subject of the film I saw last night was certainly not novel; there have been at least five films in the last year with the same idea. 昨天晚上看到的电影主题并不新颖;在去年至少有5部片子都是这个主题。

  Language Point 40    

...the endless flow of ideas...(Para. 16)
"Flow" is used figuratively, emphasizing huge, continual movement. Other examples:
a rapid flow of speech 流利的讲话
a continuous flow of information 源源不断的信息
the flow of traffic 川流不息的车辆
a rising flow of foreign visitors to China 越来越多来中国访问的外国人
