Teach Kids, Do Not Tire Them
The size of school bags carried by teenagers continues to get bigger with the start of every term. College students are always sitting in their ivory towers seven days a week, being busy reading reference books listed by tutors, and having no time to find out what is going on beyond their immediate surroundings.
Students are put under extreme stress because of the following. First, some schools ignore the requirements of the school curriculum and the regulations of the State Education Commission. They prolong classes at will, offer their students obligatory courses on Sundays or even during festivals and vacations. The students in their final year face their worst dilemma. In high school, the students are geared to the college entrance examination, while at college the students take in the competitive examinations jointly organized by several colleges. Secondly, the amount of homework for students increases. On an average , primary and middle school students spend two and half to three hours a day doing homework. When it comes to college students, they have made it a rule to stay up until midnight every day. Moreover, students are all forced to take part in all kinds of quizzes. Thirdly, too many references books for reviewing courses confuse the students. Publishers and booksellers often take the advantage of the moment when local schools order their textbooks to promote their sale of reviewing materials and exercise books. Listening the reasons, we cannot omit the most important one. The teachers' negligence of the students' overall development is the real key. Many of them concentrate their efforts indiscriminately on training their students for those examinations mentioned above, giving a cold shoulder to moral education and physical fitness. Burdened with excessive class work and homework, students are having their physical and mental health seriously damaged.
It is high time to relieve students of irrational study requirements. First of all, efforts should be made to put an end to the fierce competition between schools. Reform on the enrollment examination system is necessary. Reduction of examinations in number will give the young people more time to build up their health. But the decisive key is to ask the teachers to "teach kids, but not to tire them".
