Books
Many people say that gold and silver are valuable, because they are wanted by everybody. But I say that books are even more valuable, because they are needed by everybody. Francis Bacon said, "Some books are to be tasted, others to be swallowed, and some few to be chewed and digested." From his statement we know books can be compared to nourishments for the mind. This probably accounts for their value.
Books are our friends. Reading books is often regarded as conversation between the reader and the author. With a book in the hand, even if one lives alone, he doesn't feel lonely. Some books introduce the reader to great men and women, Chinese and foreigners, the contemporary scientists and the ancient scholars. All of them come as soon as we call for them and they go as soon as we say goodby to them. They never get tired of telling stories or experience, nor do they get annoyed at being asked questions. Indeed, books are our great and close friends.
And books are our teachers. They teach us something about truth, science and philosophy, enrich our knowledge, enlarge our vocabulary, strengthen our character. Our learning continues so long as we are kept alive. Although our life is limited, knowledge is boundless. Books are the inexhaustible sources of knowledge. So they teach us longer than any human teachers.
Books, our friends and teachers, give us much, but gold and silver can't. So we love books much more.
