Advocate Patriotism
Patriotism has traditionally been the main factor of Chinese history. The fact that Qu Yuan (340～278 B.C.) and Yue Fei (1103～1142) are still widely advised by the people today and that the names of Dong Cunrei and Huang Jiguang have become household words across the country shows how we Chinese treasure patriotism We had bred patriots one generation after another. It has been an enormous force in the advancement of Chinese society and history, and has been an ideological pillar for all Chinese.
But for a number of reasons, patriotism has been weakening in recent years. In some schools, courses introducing historical events, and national figures have been canceled or neglected. As a result, some youngsters no longer knows about Qu Yuan, Yue Fei or the Opium War. What's worse, quite a few young people consider Dong Cunrei and Huang Jiguang as fools who devoted their lives to the revolutionary cause. Being blinded by lust for gain, egoists have ignored and forgotten the nation's interest, and do harm our motherland and people. The reason for this is that some people misunderstand the painful but necessary transition from a planned economy to a free market.
Patriotism should be advocated more strongly than ever as the country shifts to market economy. We should propagate patriotism in order that everyone acts according to this principle. At no time and in no circumstances should we place our personal interest first; we should subordinate ourselves to the interests of the nation and of the masses. Patriotism tells us to sacrifice for our national heritage, and take advantage of all civilizations, be they Western, Oriental, capitalistic or socialistic. Patriotism will be best rewarded when the nation is united and our people enjoy peace and prosperity.
