“something”用法种种
“something”是一个使用频率极高的代词，其最基本的含义是“某物；某事”：There is something on the floor．（地板上有一样东西）I want somethingto eat．（我想吃东西。）但当它与其他词构成短语，或在某些句子中单独使用时，常有较活译法。请看下列例句。
一、something相当于somebody，意为“重要的人物，有一定地位的人”。例如：
He thinks that he is something．他认为自己是个了不起的人物。
二、something表示“某种令人满意的事，使人安慰的事或不简单的事”。例如：
It is something to be home again without an accident．能平平安安地回家是值得安慰的。
三、something用于表示“某种令人不快的事情”。例如：
He must be up to something．他一定在搞什么鬼花招。
There is something in the wind．（口语）好像要发生什么事情。
四、something表示“有些道理”。例如：
There is something in what he says．他说的话有些道理。
五、or something表示“不能十分肯定的人、东西、情况”等。例如：
Mr Green is a shopkeeper or something．格林先生是个店老板之类的人。
I hear that he has broken an arm or something．我听说他已折了一只手臂或别的什么。
六、something or other表示“一个什么东西，一件什么事情”。例如：
I'm sure I've lost something or other．我一定掉了一样什么东西了。
七、 something else“别的什么东西，别的什么事情”。例如：
We cannot leave，because we have something else to do．我们不能走，因为我们还有别的事要干。
八、something of意为“有点……，可说是一个……，在某种程度上是”。例如：
The man was something of a genius．这个人算是个天才。
She is something of a singer．她是一位相当不错的歌唱家。
九、 something like相当于一个副词，表示“有点像；大约”等意思。例如：
He is something like his brother．他有点像他哥哥。
His knowledge of English is something like as good as yours．他的英语知识跟你差不多。
He is something like a playboy．他有点像个花花公子。
This happened something like more than a year ago．这件事大约是一年多以前发生的。
