1go easy:适度地使用(某物);节省(某物)。如:Go easy on the mon ey-that's all we've got till next month.钱要省着点花——就这么多,要用到下个月。

2go on:不相信;举动;别夸大其词;量某人不敢做某事(鼓动某人做某事的用语)如:“Our teacher is fifty on Wednesday.”“Go on-he only looks about forty.”“我们老师星期三就五十岁了”。“我才不信呢!看上去他才四十岁”。“Should I help her or not?”“Oh go on you'll never make any girl friends if you don't”。“我该不该帮她?”“哦,帮吧!要不然你永远也交不了女朋友了。”

go at it hammar and tongs:全力以赴,劲头十足(喻如铁匠用钳夹着烧红的铁块使劲地用铁槌打。)

go by the board:丢掉;放弃(“board”指船舷。此词原义是“从船上掉到水中”,故比喻放弃某一计划、事业等。)

go down the drian:浪费钱(喻指花钱而不带来效益,像扔在沟里的垃圾和脏物。)

go drink from the sea:滚开;别管闲事(是从 to go jump in the lake to go jump off a cliff演变而来。)

go one better:超过;优胜(源于体育竞赛中需要对参加者评分的项目。)

go the whole hog:做得尽善尽美(源于杀猪卖肉,有的买主可能买整猪,即 to the whole hog.)

go through thick and thin:不畏艰险(指某人外出旅行时既经过树丛稀少而较易通过的地区,也要通过灌木丛生难以行走的地段,其意思类似to through fire and water,但危险程度较轻。)

go to a familiar well:进行人所熟悉的宣传(就像到人所熟悉的井中取水一样。)

go to pot:失败;完蛋;破产;潦倒;(营业)衰落;萧条(有些部分的鲜肉不宜于用来制作美味佳肴,故把其切成小块,同其他零碎的菜蔬放在一起,炖成杂烩之类的饭菜,后转用于指毁掉某物或者破产,萧条。)

go to the wall:被推到一旁;败北;惨败,认输(某人在街上行走、骑马或乘马车时被挤到一边紧靠墙壁无法前进,而被别人超过。通常指在斗争中或竞赛中败北或失败。源于“The weakest goes to the wall.”“强胜弱败”。)

go to one's head:酒力上头;使人感到糊涂;头晕;使人感到激动;向往,入迷,陶醉;使人冲昏头脑,骄傲(酒力上头以后,人虽然不像喝醉以后那样言行完全失去控制,总会头晕,冲动,不易自制。)

go to one's account:死(喻指上帝的最后审判日。那一天,死者的灵魂都要向上帝交待自己在人世的所作所为。)

go to seed:衰老无用;退化(原意为花谢结子,叶到了结子时,已过全盛期而凋谢。)

go to the dogs:与坏人为伍干坏事;过不正常生活以至毁灭(圣经中狗不是人类的好朋友,而是一种肮脏堕落的动物。)

go to the well with:可信赖的人(在开拓边疆时期,到被印第安人包围的地方取水常常是危险的。)

go upor end in smoke:计划、事业、希望等落空;不成功;毫无实际结果(借喻一堆火,没有火焰,也不产生热,只是冒烟。)

go west:上西天;死去(以指日落西山而言。一说源出第一次世界大战时期,指将伤亡人员从西线往西运走。)

gone coon:没有希望的人;无可救药的人;朽木不可雕(这个词是一世纪前从美国流行出来的,既适用于物,也适用于人。coon一字是美语racoon “浣熊”的缩写。)
