英语双重否定的翻译

英语中的双重否定结构一般是由no，not，never，nothing等否定词与含有否定意义的其他词连用而构成的。这类句子在形式上好像是否定结构，实际上含有肯定语气，而且比一般肯定句的语气还要强。翻译这类句子时，可以直译成双重否定，也可以译成肯定语气。例如：

Today，we can do nothing without electricity．当今，没有电，我们就什么也做不成。

（nothing without译成双重否定‘'没有……就不”。）

There is no man who doesn't make mistakes．没有不犯错误的人。

（no…not译成双重否定“没有不……”。）

In fact，there is scarcely any sphere of life where electricity may not find use- ful application．事实上，几乎没有任何一个生活领域不利用电。

（scarcely或hardly…not译成“几乎没有……不”。）

In the absence Of gravity，we could do nothing．要是没有地心引力的话，我们就什么也不能做。

（in the absence of与not，no以及nothing连用时，译成“没有……，不……”。）

You can never succeed without working hard．只有努力才能成功。

（“never…without”译成汉语的肯定语气：“只有……才能”。）

But for substances，there would be nothing in the world．要是没有物质的话，世界上就什么东西也不存在了。

（but for含有否定，意思是“没有”。but for与其他否定词 no，not，noth- ing连用时，译成“要不是……就没有”。）

Nothing is unexpected．一切都在预料之中。

（expect加上否定的前缀un，含有否定意义，与nothing连用时，译成肯定语气“在预料中”。）
