表示“坚持”含义的动词词组
在英语中，可表示“坚持”含义的动词词组较多。仅被收入两部（大学英语教学大纲）词汇表中的就有不及物动词词组keep on／hang on／hold on和及物动词词组 stick to／adhere to／hold on to／keep to，这些词组的英文释义都是 notabandon or change（不放弃，不改变），它们之间有时可互换，有时则在搭配关系等方面有一定的区别。请看下列例句：
例1：It is hard work but if you keep on（或hang on／hold on），you'll succeedin the end．这是艰苦的工作，但如果你坚持下去，你最终会成功的。
例 2：About this matter，I stick to（或 adhere to／cling to／hold on to／keepto）my original plan／my principle／what I've said．关于这件事，我坚持我当初的计划／我的原则／我说过的话。
例 3：We must stick to（或 keep to） armed struggle／the task．我们必须坚持武装斗争／做这项工作。
例 4：They decided to stick to practising the piano every day．他们决定坚持每天练钢琴。
由上述例句可知，不及物动词词组 hang on／hold on／keep on作“坚持下去”解时（例1），用法相同，可互换使用。作“坚持”解的及物动词词组的用法则可分为下述几种情况：①hold on to／cling to后接principle，plan等，表坚持原则／计划等（见例2）；②keep to除可与hold on to／cling to互换外，还可后接sth，表示坚持做某事（见例 2—3）。 ③stick to除可与 hold on to／cling to／keep to互换外，还可后接 V-ing，表示坚持做某事（见例 2—4）。
需要注意的是，有一些词组有时也译作“坚持”，但其实际表达的意思却与上述词组不尽相同，在使用中不可混淆。略举数例如下：
1．“keep on+ V-ing”译作“坚持做某事”时，实际上是表示“继续做某事”（continue doing），如：
He kept on working although he was tired．他虽然疲倦，仍坚持（=继续）工作。
He kept on smoking after the doctor told him to stop．医生已劝告他戒烟，可他仍坚持（=继续）抽烟。
2．“insist on”译作“坚持”时，实际上是表示“坚决主张”（maintainfirmly）或“坚持要求”（demand persistently）。如：
She insisted on her innocence／carrying out the experiment／all decisions beingunanimous．她坚持（=坚决主张）自己无罪／要进行这项实验／所有的决定都要由全体一致同意。
He insisted on an answer／our going there by train．他坚持（=坚决要求）要一个答复／要我们乘火车去。
3．“persist in”译作“坚持”时，则表示“（不顾困难或反对）坚决地或固执地继续”（continue firmly or obstinately）。如：
The old man persisted in doing the experiment in spite of his failing health．老人不顾体力衰退，坚持（=坚决地继续）做实验。
He persisted in his folly despite his friends'advice．他不顾朋友们的劝告，坚持（=固执地继续）干他的蠢事。
