表示“开始”的词有哪些
英语中表示“开始”、“着手”意义的词很多，常见的有begin，start，commence，inaugurate，launch，initiate，institute，oped。这些词，有的意义和用法基本相同，可以换用；有的存在一些差异，不能换用。现详述如下：
1．begin
最常用词，含义最广，可作不及物动词也可作及物动词。作及物动词时，后接名词、动名词或动词不定式。
He begins a course of study leading to a doctorate．
他开始攻读博士学位的课程。
She began skiing last winter．
她是去年冬天开始滑雪的。
2．start
在很多情况下，start可与begin换用。
I started／began mountain climbing when I was eighteen
我十八岁就开始爬山了。
It's no use waiting for Jeremy——let's start／begin．
不必等杰里米了，咱们开始吧。
但是，start动作性较强，含有“着手”的意思，侧重于做某事的第一步，即其起始。begin则动作性较弱。因此，在描写一种状态的开始，特别是较缓慢的开始时，用begin比start好；以行动来开始某一具体工作时，用start更为恰当。
We will begin work soon．
我们马上要开始工作了。
I'm glad you are beginning to see it．
我很高兴，你开始认识到这一点。
此外，start还有“起程”、“动身”、“开动”的意思，这时不能用begin代替。
I think we ought to start at six， while the roads are still clear．

The train started with a lurch．

在用法上应注意，begin或start为进行时态时，后面不接动名词。under-stand和realize作它们的宾语时只用动词不定式。

3．commence
意思和用法与begin相同，但多用于书面语，特别是在法律文件中。

4．inaugurate
表示正式隆重的开始或某种官方活动的开始，通常以某种仪式开始。
The Export Commodities Fair was inaugurated yesterday．
出口商品交易会昨天开幕了。
Once a president is inaugurated，he begins his term of office．
总统在就职典礼举行后，就开始了他的任职期。
5．launch
原指使船（尤指新船）下水，使飞机、火箭等升空，发射导弹等，引申为使某人开始从事办新的事情。与inaugurate相比，launch强调宣传，而不着重形式上的正式性。

6．initiate
表示创始、发起。只能用作及物动词。

7．institute
常用于正式场合，特别是法律方面的规则的制定，也有设立和着手办理的意思。

8．open
主要指把原来关着的东西“打开”，侧重由合而开，动作单一，没有起始性较强动作的含义。多指商店开张、开始营业，或展览会开始展览等；或用于文学作品上，指故事以叙述……开始等。
The library opens at 8∶00 in the morning．
图书馆早上八点开门。
The story opens with a terrible murder．
故事从一个可怕的谋杀开始。
