I know a great many people who wish to use adverbs correctly. However, the entire collection of them seems to struggle with the following: Is it "I feel bad for her?" or "I feel badly for her?"
Answer: Normally, most verbs would take the adverb; however, there are a few verbs which called "linking verbs," which require some thought as to whether they are followed by an adverb or an adjective. The reason is that the meaning can be dramatically changed depending on which is used:
He smells bad means that he needs to take a shower.
He smells badly means that he will never be able to be a perfume tester because he has lost his sense of smell.
This same thing applies to the verb, "feel". I feel badly means that I have lost my sense of touch. My fingers may have had some nerve endings damaged so that I cannot feel textures. I feel bad means that I ache all over or may be coming down with the flu. It could also mean that I feel sad. Other verbs in this category are taste, sound, look, and seem.
问题97:我认识很多人,他们都很想正确地使用副词,但是副词一多,就容易混淆,特别是在下面这个情况,到底是应该说“I feel bad for her?”呢,还是应该说“I feel badly for her?”呢?
回答:通常,动词都是用副词来修饰的。但是,还有一些被称为“系动词”的动词,如果遇到这种词,就需要好好考虑一下到底是用副词还是用形容词来修饰了。因为在不同的情况下,副词或形容词的选用会使该词的词意截然不同。
例如:He smells bad.是他闻上去身上有味道,需要洗澡了的意思。
He smells badly.是说他永远都不可能做个测试香水的人了 ,因为他失去了嗅觉。
动词feel也有同样的用法。I feel badly.是说我失去了触觉。我的手指可能末梢神经坏了,所以我不能感受到东西的质地。I feel bad.则是说我浑身酸痛或是感冒了。它也有我感觉很糟,很不开心的意思。属于这一类的词还有taste, sound, look和seem。
