Periods 1-2    Reading A

1.         Introduction to Unit field work and lead-in to Reading A                                 10 min.

a.         Describe a situation how to make current assessment and introduce the field work project by saying, for example:

Hello, boys and girls. What is the most important for the survival of a company? Right, “quality” is the key to success of a company. Suppose you were the manager of a company. In order to face competitive pressures, you have to improve quality of the products in your company. There are several principles concerning quality and implementing total quality management involves some elements of a quality control system. Work with your group members and make a proposal of TQM. You have about two weeks while we are learning this Unit, to accomplish a field work project, which means a research task you do outside the class. After two weeks, you are supposed to present your work in class as we do as usual..

b.         Ask students to:

-          search the library or the Internet for information about quality management;

-          make a list of skills and techniques will be trained;

-          write a report about what you have found and the plan of training, and prepare for an in-class presentation.

c.         Lead in to Reading A by saying, for example:

As the first step of your field work project, you may get some basic ideas about quality management by going through Reading A.

2.    Pre-reading activities                                                                                   10 min.

       Activity 1       Brainstorming

a.     Students work with partners and list some words relevant to “Quality Management”

b.         Invite some students to give their list and provide the suggested list below if necessary:

Quality control, promotion, quality improvement, quality audit, quantity ...

3.     In-reading activities                                                                                    50 min.

        Activity 1       Individual work: finding out the difficulties

a.     Students read the text with attention to possible language difficulties and special terms.

        b.    Students raise questions concerning the difficulties found while reading.

        c.    Encourage students to join in the explanation of difficult points.

        d.    Then ask some more questions relevant to the paragraphs.

Paragraph one:

-      What does “TQM” stand for?

-      How many principles concern quality?

Paragraph two to four:

-      What are the three principles concerning quality?

-      What is the objective of quality control?

-      What does quality focus on?

Paragraph five:

-      What are the four elements in a quality control system?

-      Does quality improvement only concern management? Why?

-      What does quality audit refer to? Why is it conducted?

Paragraph six:

-      What does employee training focus on?

-      Where do project team members come from?

Paragraph seven:

-      What is the function of the staff members trained in TQM principles and techniques?

        e.     Comment on students’ performance.

        Activity 2       Pair work: reviewing the expressions

a.     Students work in pairs with one reading out language points or special terms and the other making a sentence, paraphrasing or translating.

        b.    Monitor the work and provide help if necessary.

        Activity 3       Group work: getting the ideas

        a.     Students work in groups to discuss

-     why we should have quality management.

        -     how we can train employees.

b.    Group representatives report about their work.

c.    Invite peer comment and give feedback.

Possible difficulties in Reading A

-       In response to competitive pressures, a growing number of organizations are adopting a unique philosophy concerning quality termed total quality management.

e.g. In response to customers’ claims, the management decided to make a new policy.

-      term: vt. To designate; call

e.g. He has no right to term himself an expert.

-      These teams tackle specific assignments such as improving customer service and the manufacturing work flow or making the performance of a certain job more efficient.

tackle: vt. to take on and wrestle with

e.g. The question set by the teacher was so difficult that the pupils did not know how to tackle it.

manufacture: vt. to make or process goods, especially in large quantities and by means of industrial machines

e.g. His books seem to have been manufactured rather than composed.

manufacture: n.

-      Total quality management councils or committees are also often created at the division and top-management level to oversee the organization-wide TQM effort.

oversee:  (oversaw, overseen)    look after, control (work, workman)

overseer:工头,监工

overlook:

a) have a view of from above

e.g. From my study I overlook the bay.

b) fail to see or notice; pay no attention to

e.g. Don’t overlook any spelling mistakes in your writing.

4.     Post-reading activities                                                                                 30 min.

Activity 1        Individual work: consolidating the ideas

        a.     Students read the passage again and point out the main idea of each paragraph.

        b.    Invite some students to present their work.

c.    Give comments and refer them to exercise I for the topic sentences of some paragraphs.

Activity 2        Summarize the main content of Reading A

Three principles of TQM:

1). The objective of quality control is to achieve a constant and continual improvement in quality.

2). The focus of quality improvement and quality control extends beyond the actual product or service that an organization provides.

3). Employees are responsible for quality improvement

Four elements of a quality control system:

  1). Communicating the need for quality;

  2). Training employees in the skills and knowledge of quality;

  3). Securing employee involvement in quality;

  4). Rewarding for quality.

5.     Assignment

        a.     Students finish exercises III-VII based on what they have learned in Reading A.

        b.    Students preview Reading B.

c.    Students spare some time for the field work project.
