英语26个字母中，元音字母a在单词中发音变化最大。a在这些单词中的发音有9种之多。
1）在重读开音节中，多读作[ei]。如：pale，liberation，potato，spade，Canadian。
2）在重读闭音节中，多读作[$] 。如：camp，accident，camera，capital，astronaut。
3）在非重读音节中，多读作[+]。如：assistant，cinema，constant，arithmetic，umbrella。
