Life is a cycle that often revisits issues tackled at some previous time. Indeed, in this unit we return to the magic power of commercialism in social development. It is sometimes an accomplice of a revolt, but more often it serves to push people into a trend it has itself created. Passage A shows us the sunny side of commercialism through a case study of blue jeans, which evolved from low beginnings to high fashion. Passage B shows the dilemma of consumers experiencing "cognitive disagreement" caused by conflicting messages. Passage C goes further into the philosophical aspects of materialism in relation to consumption. It also establishes a link in US society between materialism and enslavement via the medium of advertisements.
