Unit 8 新视野大学英语第五册第八课

Preview
We all have our own values and beliefs, which help guide us through life. They also affect the way we relate to each other, and ultimately help shape our society. In this unit the three passages allow us to consider each of these dimensions: personal, interpersonal and societal. Beginning with a real incident from a recent newspaper article, the first essay of this unit discusses what happens to some basic old-fashioned values, such as honesty and kindness, in our consumer culture, where the bottom line is money. The second article introduces the creative achievements in music of the famous rock & roll star, John Winston Lennon, as well as the active and constructive role he played in striving for the peaceful world we all want. The last essay contrasts the modern consumer world with the “good old days”, and expresses the author's hope for a rational and satisfactory relationship between the customer and the merchant.
