First Listening
Please listen to a short passage carefully and prepare to answer some questions.
Vancouver is a pleasant city in Canada with a population of over one million. It was first discovered in 1792 by the British ship captain George Vancouver, after whom the city was named. In the 1860s, white pioneers started to settle down in this area. Due to its wonderful surroundings, Vancouver grew and gradually became a major commercial port on the Pacific.
The city still preserves its oldest warehouses and offices. Its best scene is the bay with lots of boats, ferries and yachts. Across the bay is the famous tree-covered Stanley Park. Not far away is Granville Island, which is now an industrial and commercial center. Granville Island's fortunes rose and fell, but now it is once again prosperous.
Now Vancouver is an important industrial and commercial city in the southwest part of Canada, and it is an attractive place for visitors as well.
