Pre-Reading Activities

 First Listening
Please listen to a short passage carefully and prepare to answer some questions.
Business students often have to study professional ethics as part of their course because many people feel that bribery is increasing internationally. The people in the motor industry in Britain have admitted to the fact that they have been making payments of one kind or another  bribes, extra discounts, etc.  in recent years. They have spent a large sum of money just to keep customers happy and they argue to say that, because the market is so competitive, if they did not give bribes then one of their competitors would. The International Chamber of Commerce (ICC) wishes to see a code of conduct that would stop bribery. While some members of the ICC would like the code to have the power of law, other members feel it is not the business of the ICC to enforce the code and that it should only state what is right and wrong.  Second Listening
Listen to the tape again. Then answer the following questions with your own experiences.
1. Why do business students study professional ethics?
2. Why do the people in the motor industry have to give bribes or extra discounts?
3. Why do some members of the ICC probably feel the code of conduct should not be legally enforceable?
